What is life like in london and barcelona?

I am 15 and I want to move to london in later life any advice?

  • I know it dangerous but I'm from South Africa so I'm kinda use to it, I've been in the uk for 2 years. I have been to london many times twice for a few days and I loved it but I moved to the Forest of Dean and I hate it here. The other reason I want to move to london is because I want to become an excellent chef. I know I don't know every think about London but I love it there so any advice or anything at all would be helpful Thanks! (and if your story is similar to mine please tell me how you got to london and how your life been Cheers!)

I too want to live and work in London in the long term. I think the best thing to do is to live in a shared house for a few years whilst trying to save money up to be able to buy your own place. I think it is possible to by a decent flat for approx. £115k in places like Battersea but house-sharing is the best place to start. Also, if you are a member of the London Social Group on Facebook, that's a great way to get to know people and potentially make new friends in London. I have had a couple of dates with girls in London that have gone well but nothing happened with them. I think if I meet a girl that shares the same values as me, it may be possible to settle down in London. I think (but could be wrong) that London is not much more expensive for buying property than places like Bristol, Plymouth or Glasgow and if you manage to save up enough money for a deposit and some of the required household goods, affording a property in the capital is manageable. But remember, try to minimise any debts you have as soon as possible and save whatever money you can whilst house-sharing. If anyone can afford to own their own place in London and do an excellent job of managing it then it's us. But it's best to start off with a house-share, then if you meet and are happy with your partner, come to an agreement where you are both willing to save up so much per month towards a deposit whilst also trying to enjoy yourself. I personally think that the opportunity to enjoy life in London is there for all to see. We will both enjoy it more once we have made great friends and found our feet with what is such a great city to be in.

having been London born and bred i would advise you don't however living in the suburbs is far nicer whilst having ease of access to London for when you need to travel/work London is very expensive so if you are training there get ready for a life full of debt - and when you get your first job get ready to learn to live with zero expendable income because the accommodation is incredibly overpriced (and over rated) and learn to live on fresh (or not so fresh) air when you go about your business you will inevitably be accosted by various homeless persons who will if you allow it relieve you of your 'spare change' - be advised that most of them live self destructive lifestyles that you will be funding. also London is the home of the 'PC brigade' gone mad - if you are white, male, heterosexual, christian, middle class (or have aspirations to be) then be prepared to have your path made extra difficult by those with extreme politics also various persons wanting 'a donation' - yep i mean CULTS operate shamelessly preying on vulnerable young intelligent people in London to recruit as life long fundraisers for their particular organisation - if people are being overly friendly to you then watch out!

Poppet, I am a Londoner. Unless you know someone you can stay with or know is at hand,I would not advise you going there for a Good few Years yet. There is London and London. In other words not all of London is glitz and glamour. You need to be Street wise, know who you are dealing with, know who to trust and be on you're guard. I Loved London, but I was no stranger to it.

London is vastly overrated. You could be making a big mistake.

Move to the suburbs. The tubes run out of London for about 30 miles so you don't have to live in the centre.

im from east london grew up there, and have just moved to cornwall im now 25. londons great, yep can be dangerous but so can most places if you go in the wrong parts. all i would say is dont move till your at least 18, poss 20 or the lifestyle could take you over and you wont end up getting ur dream of being a chef. and try and stay in a house share poss with people you know, dont get drunk out alone, and basically have fun. I LOVE LONDON and miss it heaps, oh and if your a christian check out hillsong church in totenham court road, there awesome there hehe :O)

I think you should move just outside of London, but get a job in London, the when you get used to it, noo which areas are safe and which are not so good, you will be confident about moving. I wish you all the best for the future! xxx

Well, if you are prepared to spend a few years (at least) living hand to mouth... it should be okay. If you're intending to attend college or a culinary school, look for one in that area. It would be a great way to be in the city for a couple of years. If you think you'd prefer to just get stuck in with working, etc, I'd suggest you get a job where you are, start up a bank account, and save as much money as you can. Then head off to London and get a short term houseshare. You can find tons of these on Gumtree.com. Once you're settled there, time to hit the pavement and find a job to pay the bills. After that you can look for opportunities to work in a kitchen. Good luck.
