London living expenses.

Are living expenses in London really that bad?

  • I'm thinking of moving to London for university next year (got my eye on King's!) But I've had loads of people tell me its really expensive which is kinda putting me off. Is it really that bad? What should I expect for rent/food e.c.t. I currently live in Leeds, West Yorkshire by the way, is there anything I could do to make my transition smoother like save up or something lol? Thank you in advance!

They are really bad. I'll give you a quick example- Sometimes ONE ROOM in London can cost (for rent) £300. Not per year- per month. Yep, it's that bad. That id for a ROOM. I would suggest (if you get in) meeting up with some other people going there and flat-sharing. This will spread living costs. Live with 3-4 other mates, and it shan't be too bad- still expensive. Start saving NOW. Also, brush up on home-cooking. Takeaways and supermarket meals really add up, and buying a few cheaper ingredients and making baked potatoes, or even your own pizza, can save loads of £s.

I think the student finance company lend you more money if you're going to London, to try and help you out a bit. But, unfortunately, it is a noticeable difference. I'm not sure what the difference in average rent price is or anything, but I know it is considerably more! You could probably check out some estate agents' websites to see if it is that horrific. Food- I suppose Tesco can't really charge much more for a bottle of milk in London than in Leeds- in national companies, you probably won't notice it so badly. I think rent is the big thing. I thought about Kings, but it was too near home (I live in Kent), and honestly, the cost of living in London put me off. I'm sorry, I didn't mean to dishearten you! BUT the saving grace is the extra few thousand (hundred... I'm not sure) in the student loan.

Yeah, the living expenses are pretty high but it's all worth it! it depends where you gonna move for the rent, because it's all different but.. for Food expect to pay a lot more for that..
