Racism in Scotland (Glasgow)?
-
Hi there, I am from Australia and met a scottish guy almost 2 years ago here in sydney. The relationship is going great but unfortulately he had to move back to scotland a few months ago and asked me to join him there. I have made a decision to move to glasgow temporarily, however, being from a non-white background, I wonder how much racism there is in Scotland. I was in scotland last year in August just to travel and thought it was a lovely country, but I was only there for a week so dont really know about the people there. What concerns me is that whenever I go to Scottish chatrooms in yahoo, there is always the topic of racism. Paki bashing, Muslim bashing, English people bashing, argument between Rangers and celtics, catholics and protestants or people being beaten up by Neds. So I wonder how hard it will be for me to fit in when i am there. I also have trouble understanding glaswegian accent, which probably doesnt help!!! ha ha How bad is scotland in terms of racism? Are they open to getting to know people from different races or are they sheltered? Any suggestions would be great!

Answer:
Hello, I'm a 26 year old male that has lived in Glasgow all my life and I would be lying to say racism didn't exist in Glasgow, although I don't think the chat rooms would be an accurate place to see how it exists in the real world. On the surface there appears to be hatred among Celtic and Rangers fans, but this is mainly done in a friendly way, although it can sound aggressive because of peoples choice of words and the Glasgow accent. To answer your question, if the average person from Glasgow witnessed racism, they would be sickened by it and probably try to defend the person being attacked. However, like anywhere, there is a minority of people who dislike other people because of no valid reason, this could be the area you come from, your race, the school you go to etc. Depending on what part of Glasgow you are moving too, I'm sure you will love it and the people hear will love you, especially if your from Australia, the Scots and the Aussies get on great! Hope this helps.

As far as I'm aware it's no worse than anywhere else. I've lived in Glasgow most of my life and one of my friends is of Pakistani origin and doesn't seem to have any problems. The Rangers/Celtic thing is really more of a friendly rivalry thing than real hatred. You'll hear a lot of banter that might sound aggressive to an outsider but that's all it is 99% of the time - banter. 10% of the Scottish population was born in England and there are around a million Scots living in England. Whenever I hear about Scots being anti-English it's generally from English people who've never even been to Scotland and want something to moan about.

People don't realy have a problem with it. Scotland doesn't have a name for racism as far as I know. I have black friends who don't experience that kind of abuse. I'm sure you'll be fine. EDIT: Just to let you know the whole thing between rangers and celtic isn't really a serious thing. It's just people supporting their teams. And some scots do make fun of the english but it's not really a big problem. It's always magnified by the media and stuff

It is not that bad. Years ago, when I lived there as a kid, I was on the receiving end of sectarianism , which has stayed with me all my life. I forgive them now. That was, for too long, the elephant in the room for many years in West Central Scotland! I have been criticised here for even mentioning it in the past! You should be fine. There are great places to live and MOST people are great. Anyway, Australia does not have such a great reputation when it comes to how it treats people from the Middle East, does it?

"Paki bashing, Muslim bashing, English people bashing, argument between Rangers and celtics, catholics and protestants or people being beaten up by Neds. ". I'm white English, you're not white, welcome to the club of people not liked by Scottish racists! There was a racist character called Maglashan on a Channel 4 comedy series called Absolutely, I can't find a youtube clip. I went to Edinburgh to look for work, their unemployment office made it absolutely clear they had zero intention of paying me anything while I looked. 'Forgot' things, sent the wrong forms 'by mistake' etc. Ignore Scots who say Scots aren't racist, they should try speaking with an English accent and see what it's like.

Happens all over the world... : BATTERED Scots tourist Mark Willis was left fighting for his life in Australia after being attacked because of his ACCENT, a court heard yesterday. I am Glaswegian, and lived there most of my life. My mother however is Thai (though I appear white, and completely Scottish) and has had one or two incidents in the past that are racist, not comments or anything just looks and things. I think it is more because she is not a native speaker of English, and can take a long time to say something, or can not think of the word she wishes to use. I have never however come across something racist against someone just because of their skin colour. Scottish people are well-known for being majority nice and helpful to foreigners, even ones who don't speak English, or have a hard time understanding our accent lol There is a rivalry between the English and Scottish, and in result some English people seem to think we hate them, of which we don't, we love them really like brother and sister (and like brother and sister we have that rivalry) haha In other words, I don't think you have anything to worry about. :) And if you do come across someone racist, you know where to tell them to stick it haha Good Luck :D

Glasgow is one of the least racist areas I have ever been to. The scourge of sectarianism still exists and annual Anti-Catholic marches are held annually. Your Australian accent is a big advantage. Nobody dares to make fun of an Australian accent! Not all Glaswegians are hard to understand. It is really a social class thing. Some parts of Glasgow are among the most deprived places in Europe and are to be avoided. Fact. The Glasgow suburbs in East Dumbartonshire are the eighth best place to live in the UK!

I wouldnt judge anything by what goes on in chatrooms. People are usually very 'brave' when sitting behind a computer and say things they normally wouldnt. You will always find racism in some shape or form no matter which country you go to, but its usually the minority of idiots, the majority are more mature, have more sense and take people as they find them. @Anonymouse - rubbish, there are quite a few coloured, Slovaks and others now living and working in Ayr, have been for quite a while, and as they are still here, I'm assuming they are getting on just fine.

You should be fine in Glasgow, but I don't advise going to Ayrshire or any little towns.
