Is Glasgow, Scotland very windy?

Why isn't Glasgow Scotland's capital?

  • I really don't understand this. I've lived in both places, and I found Glasgow to be a better representation of Scotland. All the stereotypes of Scotland come from Glasgow, the national Scottish shop, Primark, is more common in Glasgow, people are friendlier in Glasgow, and the statue in the town with the traffic cone on its head is pretty famous. Plus most bands, when touring, will play a venue in Glasgow, because Glaswegian crowds are mental. I'm looking at this from experience-why isn't Glasgow the capital?

Eventhough Glasgow is the largest city in Scotland it is not Scotland's capital. This is because Edinburgh is the historic centre of Scotland's government bodies and organisations. Edinburgh was and still is the home of the Royal Residences of Monarchs of Scotland and now UK. Personally i view Edinburgh as the very best representation of Scotland with it's historic ancient buildings and castle and bagpipers etc. Glasgow for me has it's very own culture and identity within Scotland. There are many Irish immigrants in Glasgow along with Unionist Scots who consider themselves British more than Scottish. The reason why many bands and people come to Glasgow is because of the population. I would say Glasgow is the commercial capital of Scotland by far, but Edinburgh is the political capital. It is also home of the devolved Scottish Parliament, Headquaters of the Church of Scotland and the Court of Session. Edinburgh for me is a place that does not feel British. It feels distinctly Scottish and i sometimes even feel like i'm not in Britain when i visit there.

Because Edinburgh is the financial, Ecclesiastical, Social and Political Capital of Scotland it has been since the 1600s. Why change it now ?

because its not just Glasgow is bigger that it has to be the capital. Capitals are often chosed for their location/culture (strong belonging)/administrative activity.

Glasgow accent is sexier too ;)

I should be doing something else

glasgow is more of a residential place. edinburgh has the history/parliament (however toothless it may be). if captials were purely to represent the current ambience (if you will) of a country, then they'd be changed far too often. capitals are based on the past i suppose.

Basically, though Glasgow is a better city (in my opinion!) Edinburgh is the base of the "important places" like the parliament building and Holyrood Palace. This is what it all boils down to!

Because Edinburgh is, Perth was before.

Primark! Really I thought Primark came from Ireland but then I suppose the Scotti came from Ireland too. I would say because Edinburgh was always the capital and tradition counts for a lot.

Edinburgh was chosen as the capital city because Glasgow does not have a Castle?
