What are the best areas just outside Glasgow city centre for a family to live in?
-
Is Pollokshields or Rutherglen ok for a family? are there good school and facilities there? We dont want to be no more than 10 mins from city centre and I thought maybe the west end would be more "studenty" rather than family orientated. Any help would be appreceited. (my husband is originally from Glasgow but we met in Yorkshire 15 years ago and he settled here, where I am from and now he would like to move back to be near his family as his Mother is terminally ill) He doesnt really know himself about areas as its been 20 years since he lived in Glasgow. Any help would be very much welcome.

Answer:
Lenzie, Bishopbriggs, Bearsden and Milngavie are regarded as the best but because of this houses are expensive to buy. The West end is fine, but again is expensive for houses as it's mostly made up with flats.

Agree that Lenzie is lovely. East Renfrewshire and East Dumbartonshire are good places to live. If you're looking for good schools both those areas are good. Look up http://www.eveningtimes.co.uk/go/schools for school league tables I love the west end of Glasgow but house and flat prices are high. Dowanhill is beautiful but very expensive. Partick again is expensive but good. The east end of Glasgow is much cheaper but some areas are not as good to live, Dennistoun is alright.

Of the two you mention Rutherglen better. Agree, places like Milngavie (pronounced mul-guy) nice. The West End would more than likely mean a flat, more common with Scottish families, but is a great area to live.

I would go to Bearsden and Milngavie. East Dumbartonshire is among the best places to live in the UK (Really!) The West End is still a nice place to live if you live in a nice bit.

Lenzie, Kirkintilloch & Bishopbriggs are also good.

I am not being racist to anyone but Pollokshields is mainly asian/african immigrants. I was in Rutherglen today and I noticed the high amount of unemployed people just walking about doing nothing and a lot of the shops have closed down. Cambuslang is slightly better than Rutherglen. I would not want to live in the west end as I still remember it from the 60's as a place we wanted to get out of, like Drumchapel, Partick, Anniesland etc and there is also a large number of immigrants living in the west end due to the local universities. If you are looking to buy a family property then the west end will be very expensive, Good Luck
