Answer:
Carmunnock is a small conservation village on the extreme south side of Glasgow. It would have remained a sleepy village had it not been for the construction of the post-war Castlemilk housing scheme. Castlemilk was in the parish of Cathcart, which, in the 1920s had voted to be "dry" - i.e. no alcohol sales! So, if you wanted a drink, Castlemilk residents had either to go to Croftfoot or to Carmunnock. That led to trouble in Carmunnock, especially at weekends, which led to the closure of the pub. The Liquor Licensing laws changed in the 1980s, but there was little spare land on which to build a pub. Being a conservation village, there are strict restraints on what alterations or additions you can make to your property (For example, in the Edinburgh New Town Conservation Area, you can only paint your front door in one colour!) Historically, Carmunnock was middle/upper class, predominatly Presbyterian. These days that has been watered down somewhat, although there is very little "affordable" housing in the village, which restricts some from moving there. Although it has the customary "village shops", you will need to go elsewhere for much of your shopping (East Kilbride is the most likely, although you also have Mount Florida, Queens Park, Cathcart or the City Centre.) Carmunnock is still, essentially, countryside. If you want to live in the country, whilst retaining the benefits of the city, then you are on a winner. But, given the level of Council Tax in Glasgow, I would choose to live just beyond the city boundary!
