What is there to do in Edinburgh?

What Is A Duke Of Edinburgh Award Worth?

  • Im 14 and i just finished my bronze duke of edinburgh camp exibition. i passed my exibition yay!. I know that you have to have REALLY good grades aswell but is a duke of edinburgh gonna help get through to a decent college, uni or get a decent saturday job or give you a push you to employment or something like that. You would really ease my mind if you answer this question. Im starting to think was all that walking and camping worth it (other than the amazing experience, of course). Also, my friend was gonna go to duke of edinburgh but she dropped to go to another school trip and she says she really really regrets it but is it possible if you didnt do the bronze d of e, can you do the silver? thank you :) x

Yup - it's a good laugh but it really DOES make a difference when you go for any sort of job, uni place etc... it gives you something to talk about at the interview and something interesting to put on the 'hobbies and interests' bit on an application form (other than 'watching films, going out with my mates' etc). Employers understand the general values of a DofE Award - teamwork, decision making, trying new things, resilience etc - often better than they understand the value of GCSEs etc (especially if you read the papers, which say these are always getting easier!). If you were an employer, even for a Saturday job, and had to choose between two 16 year-olds with 5 similar GCSEs, but one had a DofE Award, which would you pick? Which would stand out as a more interesting sounding person? My 16 year old just got a holiday job on the strength of his DofE as about 20 other kids of his year also went for it and they were all the same sort of young person, with similar everyday interests, except for him and his Bronze (he talked at the interview about his volunteering at Beavers, his tennis, his chicken-keeping and about getting soaked on his expo. Useful lefalet from the DofE: http://www.dofe.org/media/viewfile.aspx?filepath=Miscellaneous%20resources%5Cvalue%20of%20theDofE%20to%20employers.pdf&filetype=4 You can start at Silver without doing Bronze but your friend will have to do a few extra months on some of her activities - you won't have to!

A D of E is worth the effort, it looks good or your future C.V. It says active, outdoorsie, resourceful.

Of course it's worth it …like the fact that achieving an Award will give you skills, confidence and a view on life that everyone is looking for, from employers to colleges and universities. ...you're getting recognised for doing things you want to do (and may even be doing already). ...plus you’ll make a difference to other people’s lives and your community, be fitter and healthier, make new friends and have memories to last you a lifetime. And above all, it's a great laugh! The question should really be why wouldn't you bother! ♣

If you are talking about money it is worth nowt. If you are talking about impressing a possible employer when taken along with your academic achievements it gives you an edge. If you are talking about just doing because you want to do it, it is priceless.

It might inpress some employers but not many. I did bronze and silver for self acheivment, but i started work so could not do gold. You do have to work from bronze. It's what you want to do, but enjoy it if you do not don't.

It looks great on your CV. When I was employing people, the award was often a reason for the individual getting a job.
