3 day trip to scotland?
-
Hi, I am planning to go for a trip to scotland this week with my wife and kid (3 years old). I know its quite late to plan but believe with experts around I might be able to make it. The current plan is to start from manchester around Thursday evening reach either Glasgow/Edinburgh by train (don't have a car for this trip). So I get 3 full days for going around scotland and would come back to Glasgow/ Edinburgh by Sunday evening and start back on Monday morning. Need help on the following: 1. Which place should I make my base Glasgow or Edinburgh? 2. Wanted to visit Isle of skye and highlands with Edinburgh but think that 3 days would be too short. So whats the best alternative, just take the 3 days tours with some tour operators for highland and Isle of skye or stay in Edinburgh for a day and then plan couple of day tours or a 2 day tour (which won't cover Skye). 3. My daughter is 3 years and most of the tours don't allow children below 5 years. So need suggestion on where to go and which areas to visit where taking my daughter along would be fine. 4. I don't want to spend a hefty amount on the trip but am looking for budget travel. 5. We are mainly interested to explore the natural beauty and cute little towns rather than some historical monuments/ museums etc, Hope you all can help me plan my trip. Thanks a lot!

If it's a 3 day trip without a car then sorry but you are going to have to forget about the highlands and islands. Best way to do it is to make Edinburgh your base ad then take a day to explore these three cities: 1) Edinburgh: Castle, Royal Mile, Princess gardens, St Giles Cathedral, Plenty of museums to pick from, Scottish parliament, take a walk up Arthur's seat. There is loads to do in Edinburgh. 2) Stirling: Again you have the Castle, Wallace monument, Stirling Jail, Bannockburn and if the weather is nice, the Safari park (if you don't have a car they run a bus, check the website). 3) Glasgow: No castle but you have, Peoples palace, Glasgow green, Botanic gardens, there are 100s and i mean hundreds of museums in the city but check out Kelvingrove and the Burrell collection. Glasgow by far has the best shopping in Scotland.

Three days isn't a lot of time and Skye is a long way from the central belt, so I'd concentrate on Glasgow and Edinburgh if I was you. Edinburgh is more tourist-oriented than Glasgow and is a lot more compact, so I would suggest making Edinburgh your based, but taking the train over to Glasgow one day for a few hours (it's only 45 minutes away). If you really do want to concentrate on scenery rather than towns etc, you'd probably be better hiring a car than using trains. Stirling, which is roughly half-way between Glasgow and Edinburgh has an awesome castle and is at the boundary between the lowlands and the start of the mountainous area so it is quite pretty, and well served by trains. Other suggestions would be Loch Lomond (15 miles north of Glasgow) or the Clyde estuary to the west of Glasgow, but you really would need a car.

I would say concentrate on Edinburgh...there is lots to do and see.You will not have time to go to the Highlands but you should try the borders. They are beautiful too.I would avoid Glasgow.Only because it is sprawling and will be very tiring dragging your wee one around.

I do not think that you can do it without hiring a car. I would make my base in Edinburgh as there is so much to do there.

edinburgh is a lot nicer. its more touristy and friendly, with a lot more things to do. there is the castle to see, loads of places to eat and things to do. check out glasgow through the day, but to be honest...i personally hate the place. its unfriendly, full of alcoholics and not much to do. the isle of skye is great but its far away, i dont think 3 days will be nearly enough time to get there, see everything and get back. if your gonna go to glasgow then id look at the surrounding areas like helensburgh where its got great scenery and hills to walk and seaside cafe's etc.

1. Edinburgh, definitely. Although a touristy place, it's a pleasant and safe city. In comparison to Glasgow, there's no rough areas. Also, there's a lot more touristy places where you can sightsee. 2. From Edinburgh, the highlands would be AT least a 6-7 hour drive. To John O Groats from Edinburgh, it's at least a 6 hour drive. (And nearly 300 miles) I think you're cutting it a bit short if you're only in Scotland for 3 days. 3.-Bus Tours. - National Museum of Scotland - Edinburgh Castle - Scottish Parliament (Holyrood), although you may not want to cloud her mind with politics. - Botanic Gardens - Princes Garden 4. If you're taking a train, it's going to cost you a larger amount. The best form of travel you can get on short notice is by using National Express. You can purchase your tickets on their website, simply type "National Express" into google, and then you print off your tickets. (or have them sent to your phone) You can grab a single adult ticket via National Express from Manchester Coach Station right now for £30.30. And as a bonus kids under 5 travel free. From Manchester Picadilly there are a few left from M'chester Picadilly to Edinburgh via train (national rail enquiries) for £35 (adult). Kids under 5 also go free. Although by the time you read this they'll probably have ran out as cheapest fares are always booked fast. I doubt you'll read it, but if you do manage to catch the train at 10:16am, an adult fare will cost you £35. After this train until 12:16, train fares are £88 and then back to £35 at the 12:16 train. So there's a significant difference depending on what time you grab your train at. 5: Try visiting: Penicuik (20 minutes from Edinburgh) Moffat (An hour from Edinburgh, fantastic little town though, I recommend it.) Really hope this helps. Have a safe journey and enjoy your trip.
