What is the best area to live in Birmingham, UK?

  • HI, I`m 24 and me and my BF are moving to Birmingham soon...as we are intensivly searching for accomodation i was wondering if u could advice me the area which is best to enjoy living in Birmingham. As we live in Barcelona now, we would prefer a not too much peaceful area...something like city center i guess.thanks!

  • Answer:

I wouldn't bother moving here to be honest, Birmingham has the highest unemployment rate in the country. Good areas: Kings Heath. Woodgate Valley. Edgebaston. Harbourne. Halesowen. Selly Oaks. Moseley. Maypole. Hollywood. Weoly Castle. Bad areas: Northfield. Kingstanding. Perry Barr. Acocks Green. Small Heath. Sparkbrook.

Good luck with moving here but i wouldn't recommend Birmingham as a place to live honestly. It is very difficult to get a job here as it has the highest unemployment rate in the country. Most of the neighourhoods are pretty run down and grotty particularly the ones near the city centre (no trees!!). It takes more than 3 hours driving to get to any coastline. It lacks the green spaces and access to the countryside like with other cities. The only nice places i would reccomment that are near Birmigham are Sollihul, Sutton Coldfield and Woodgate Valley but they will be very expensive. Good luck!

Firstly, let me say I love Birmingham.. However, personally I wouldn't live anywhere near the city centre or the areas just surrounding it. It's fine to visit for shopping/night life, but not somewhere I would live. I'd go a little further out. Somewhere like Solihull, Shirley, Hall Green or Kings Heath. Solihull is a lovely place, you'll notice the fact that there are loads of trees alongside the roads there making it seem a much greener place to live. Unfortunately you'll pay more for accommodation there, but you can jump on the bus and be in Birmingham city centre in around 45 mins whenever you want whilst still living in a much nicer environment.

Birmingham is so large and that if you don't live close to the city centre you will not be able to walk there because it will take too long. I live relatively near the city centre but it still takes an hour to get to the city centre if I walk there. There is not much nightlife in Birmingham, actually, other than in the city centre so you are best sticking with the city centre. There are many appartments in Birmingham city centre where you could live. The problem is, when you get past the edges of the city centre, most of the residential areas what surround the centre like Digbeth, Hockley, Duddeston, Newtown and Ladywood etc are run down, but the centre itself is ok. Areas like Edgebaston and Harborne are affluent areas where the rich people in Birmingham live, and they are nice, but I would not say that there is an awful lot to do in them. I live in Perry Barr, and the area is grotty, but its cheap to live in, and it is not rough like what everyone says and if you keep yourself to yourself then people will leave you alone. You find the worst areas are those which border the city centre. Although Newtown used to be one of the worst areas, I think the crime hotspot area now is around Digbeth and Small Heath and I looked on police.uk website once when I had too much time on my hands. If I could afford to move to a nicer area, I would choose Sutton Coldfield or Solihull. They have more of a town feeling to them - like a community, and there are things to do there but they are greener than most of Birmingham is. Best of luck with the move, if you want to suggest any suberbs, Ill tell you what I think of them, if I've been to them.

Birmingham is in England, Are you one of those people that thinks the UK is just England? The UK is Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland & England altogether.
