If you are an EU citizen then a valid photo ID ie drivers licence/national identity card should be sufficient for a flight between the 2 cities (unless you are travelling with Ryanair who insist you have a passport). If you are American you would need a passport, your question is posted on Yahoo United states so its a bit confusing what nationality you are?

All other answers are wrong. Ireland and Britain did not sign up to the Schengen Agreement however they made an identical agreement just between each other due to Northern Ireland. Technically you will not need a passport. However if you travel by plane, all flights have to go through passport control even flights from Britain when arriving in Ireland. This is not always the case if you are flying to Britain from Ireland (sometimes they will accept just plane tickets from these flights at passport control however they are getting stricter). Passports are not usually checked when you traverl by ferry between the two countries. However if you travel by ferry it is still highly recommended yo have your passport in Ireland in case you get into an emergency and need the help of your embassy.

Yes, The Republic of Ireland and United Kingdom are two different sovereign nations that require a passport to enter, including travel between them if you don't have either british or irish citizenship.
