Advice on doing a presentation.

Doing a presentation on General Michael Collins for college history. Need speech advice and maybe info on him?

  • I need more information on him, wiki isn't much of a help, I've watched the movie, but there aren't many sites on him! The presentation needs to be 15 mins long, I'm scared I won't be able to 5!!!! I'm also terribly afraid of speaking, even more so now because I'm secretly in love with my teacher, lol. So please give me the best advice for a good speech. Would you recommend a little bit of alcohol before hand so I don't have a heart attack? Im so stressed out about this, it's not until nov 16 but I'm NOT ready at all!! Please help no one will answer this.

As everyone else has said, the history section of your local library is your best friend. Try looking up reviews of books about Michael Collins, note the most popular ones with the best reviews and look for those specific books in your library/ask the librarian to order them in. As well as books, check out the Easter 1916 tours on Moore St, Dublin http://generalmichaelcollins.com and/or the Michael Collins Centre in West Cork, http://www.michaelcollinscentre.com Divide the presentation into sections that you'll be talking about. Some of these may include: 1. Who is Michael Collins? (a sentence or two about him - this would obviously be at the start of the presentation) 2. Early Life (his childhood and education) 3. Easter 1916 (don't make this a big section but have a few key facts about when it happened, why, and what its relevance is to Michael Collins and the War of Independence). 4. Any other notable events leading up to the War of Independence (again, key facts) 5. The War of Independence (this is one of the main sections so go into more detail here. If possible, you can divide this into a few different sections) 6. Aftermath of the War of Independence (again this can be divided up into a few different sections, such as the Anglo-Irish Treaty, etc). 7. Ireland today, as a result of the War of Independence and other events related to Michael Collins. I'm not saying this is a good way of dividing up your presentation - it all depends on the information you get and how you want to organise and present it - but dividing the topic into different sections is a good way to go, and will make your presentation neater and easier to follow. Also have a drink before the presentation if you think it would help, but have just 1, not 10. Take a few deep breaths before starting the presentation and speak loud and clear with a smile on your face, look interested in what you're talking about and try to speak with a lively tone, you don't want it to be dull. As someone else said, do practise your presentation with family and friends a few times, it'll make you less nervous and they can provide feedback on how you can improve. Good luck :)

I do not know anything about Michael Collins, but I know a lot about public speaking. The first thing you need is you have to be a master of your topic. If someone asked you directions to your house, you could answer without hesitation. It's probably too late to change your topic, but you really need to find out everything you can about him. Practice by telling his story to your friends or family until you are comfortable with the subject. If someone had a question about him, you could answer immediately. The second thing you need is confidence. Public speaking can be frightening, but it does not have to be. One of the best techniques is pretending everyone in the room are your friends. As if, you were sitting down at a table drinking tea and having conversation. You would not be nervous about that because you've done that sort of thing your whole life. So, read everything you can about the guy, watch the movie two more times and talk about him. When you do your speech, look at the people as if you have known them your entire life. No one in a speech class is out to get you, they want to see you do well. Good Luck!

It might be a bit old fashioned, but have you looked in the college library for a rare thing... it is a bunch of pieces of paper wedged between to hardened boards, called a book... The movie michael collins is highly romanticised and hollywood version. Just a quick google search yeilded the following results http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/historic_figures/collins_michael.shtml http://www.generalmichaelcollins.com (biased in favour of him) http://www.militaryhistoryonline.com/20thcentury/articles/MichaelCollins.aspx http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Collins_(Irish_leader) http://multitext.ucc.ie/d/Michael_Collins Tim Pat Coogan wrote a pretty extensive biography of collins. called Michael Collins

History section, local library. Also, google. And you have almost a month, that's plenty of time to buy a secondhand book on Amazon and read that for background info!
