that turkish empire you mention is called ottoman empire. in 1300's it was just established. (in 1299 by Osman Bey) In that time, in Anatolia there were Turkic Beyliks (like the city states of italy) and the collapsing Seljuk Sultanate of Rum (Anadolu Selçuklu Devleti- Anatolian Seljuk State). Seljuk Sultanate of Rum is the last Turkish state before Ottoman. Other beyliks were small principalities. Seljuk State was under the invasions of Mongolians. And Byzantine had lands in Western Anatolia. Osman bey, married the daughter of a powerful religious character of the Ahi ( a big religious community) than increased his political power. He made invasions towards Byzantine. There was a chaos in Byzantine, mainly fights for the throne, and invasions and pressure from Balkans and the west. He took advantage of the chaos in Byzantine and the Anatolian Beyliks, and Seljuk State. Seljuk state collapsed few years after Ottoman was established. Just like other Beyliks which were joining the Ottoman. Beyliks were accepting the dominance of Ottoman one by one, the Ottoman expanded by wars with Beyliks, or marriages of their kids with the kids of Beyliks. It was usual to give lands as a marriage present. :D Military power comes from the lands taken, the kings and sultans of these lands accepted to send soliders in case of a war and payed taxes. and there was a strong army of the central authority. at first Serbians, Bulgarians and Hungarians were attacking Byzantine, but after the invasions of Ottoman towards Balkans- eastern Europe, they formed a united army against Ottoman. and sometimes Beyliks were in war with Ottoman at early times. Empire at first only had Turks in western Anatolia, but then as they got more lands, central Anatolia Turks, and Balkan people made up the Ottoman. They sent Turks to Balkans and to other lands to change the demographic balance. In 14th century, Ottoman wasnt present at Eastern Anatolia and Middle East, so i dont count Eastern Anatolia Turks and Middle Easterner Arabs in Ottoman. Empire had both armies and navies. The geography is critical rather than providing a defense. And btw brother fights for the throne was very usual in Ottoman. And killing brothers to become the Padişah (sultan or the king of the Ottoman) happened frequently. The mothers of padişahs and princes and other family members were involved in games for the throne in the palace. There was a period of chaos and crisis from 1402 to 1413, "Fetret Devri" when 4 şehzade (sons of the previous padişah, a possible next padişah) fought for the throne but their fights lasted for years.. That period caused the weakness of the empire.
