I'm going to Turkey in July and I'm unsure what currency to take as well as how much spending money to take?
-
I have just booked a 7night holiday for my boyfriend and I to Turkey (Antalya) on a bed and breakfast basis. I have been told that you can take euros to Turkey and they will accept it even though their currency is Lira - is this true? Would I be better off taking Euros or Lira? I was thinking to take about £650 spending money, would this be enough if we are eating out everyday for lunch and dinner and also going sightseeing etc? My boyfriend will also be bringing £650 so altogether, will £1300 be enough? I'd appreciate answers from people who have been to Turkey themselves, although I will be grateful for other general opinions. Thank you! Xxx

Answer:
I have been going to Turkey for 10 years. We always take a few hundered pounds in Lira. But we take the rest of the money in English notes. They prefer English as they can make more money off it and you get things at a better price to. I would Take £1300 between you as their is lots of markets and shops were you can buy your designer names. You wont just but one or two things you will walk away with bag loads. Also at the market you will find lots of small gifts and clothing that is good. You can get most designer names their. Meals vary from place to place and how much they will cost. I will be returning to turkey this year in October and i kwo that prices will be lower as it is end of season. I you are going April/ May prices wont be to bad you will get good value for money. If you go High Season June/ July/ August you will be ripped off they put all the prices up on every thing as thats when most people go. I f you September/ october you will get things as a good price as that the tourist year comming to an end and they are trying to get rid of everything.

They do accept Euros in most places. However, I think it is better to use their own money (Lira). This way when you pay, you don't always have to calculate the conversion rate for the item and your change. How much to take? Depends on how fancy you eat and what you like to do, but 1,300 pounds seems more then you need. A better way of doing it is to take a little bit of money, then withdraw from ATMs as needed (provided you have an ATM (cash card) card. It is not wise to travel with that much money on you. It can get stolen easily, no matter what country you are in. Also, purchase with a credit card as much as you can. Always be on guard to protect your cards. Enjoy Turkey. Was in Antalya last fall. Absolutely wonderful place.

Take Euros or dollars, change a small amount to Liras as soon as you arrive , in the airport, about 300 liras should be enough for you to start your tour, you'll be able to change the rest in your hotel or at Foreign Exchange offices or banks in Antalya. The hotel will probably take Euros, or exchange them , but their rates will not be as good as in the market.
