Are atheist Europeans not EU citizens?
-
I ask this question in this because there is a lot of rant about Turkish people not "deserving" to be considered as Europeans and therefore should not join the EU. Here some facts: A November–December 2006 poll published in the Financial Times gives rates for the United States and five European countries. It found that Americans are more likely than Europeans to report belief in any form of god or supreme being (73%). Of the European adults surveyed, Italians are the most likely to express this belief (62%) and the French the least likely (27%). In France, 32% declared themselves atheists, and an additional 32% declared themselves agnostic. An official European Union survey provides corresponding figures: 18% of the EU population do not believe in a god; 27% accept the existence of some supernatural "spiritual life force", while 52% affirm belief in a specific god. The proportion of believers rises to 65% among those who had left school by age 15; survey respondents who considered themselves to be from a strict family background were more likely to believe in god than those who felt their upbringing lacked firm rules. Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atheist#Demographics Once again: Only 52% of the Europeans believe in a specific God. Let's pretend that all of them were Christians (let's forget about the rest for the moment). 32% of the French population is atheist and 32% agnostic (believe in God but not Christian). Are the Europeans without a Christian belief less European than others? Should their EU passports be taken away because they don't see themselves as Christians? If a European chooses to become a Buddhist, should he be considered as an Asian? What do agnostic or atheist EU citizens think of people who want to reduce the EU to a "Club of Christians"?

Answer:
I would say a similar thing to the first guy. If you asked them, they would say a European atheist is different than a Turkish atheist. As for "deserve", Turkish people deserve much better than an understanding of Europe based on fascist 30's and 40's.

European values, morals, culture and civilization are based a lot on Christianity. Even some people are atheists/agnostics, they in fact brought up with this way of living..
EU ? Christian Club...?! I don't think that's something Europeans will be proud to say. Separation of church and state is one significant factor of EU, as much as I know.
It's nothing to do with Christianity ! Turkey is a "Eurasian" country, meaning a big part of it is in ASIA ! Therefore how can it become part of a "European" union ? It has borders with Iran, Iraq and Syria ! Hardly "European !!!

hi, I DON’T SUPPOSE THE REAL Problem for EU is islam. They cheat their people. The real problem is population and money sharing. It is 7 billion EURO paid to us so far. They must pay ,approx.40 billion EURO(for reducing the villager population and entegration of industry and commercial).DO THEY HAVE THIS MONEY? Result of EU: We lost 200 billion dollars because of Customs Tax Treaty. We sold our national banks, factories, telecom company. Now we sell our land.We must stop this.If you research the economical and technological development capitalism and the western country must work hard(especially mortgage and customer credits bubble). This crisis is deeper than 1929 crisis and western economists can not solve this.

Religion should have absolutely nothing to do with Turkey's bid to join the EU - in fact, though I'm not a fan of Ataturk, one of the greatest things he did for his country was to make it politically secular, and to so effectively seperate religion from the state. To be clear, Turkey's bid to become a member state should have nothing to do at all with its religion, nor should a country have to be predominantly Christian to be an EU member. The only requirements should be soceo-economical and political.

to the people who insist in proving that turkey is not european or never will be....by talking about borders are a complete waste of my time. if we are going to do it that way then spain, portugal, italy, finland and russia should all be banned from the EU and europe for life.take a look at a world map and see how close those 'european nations' are to non-european nations.dumb idea you say? good, its finally clicking in ur head. The EU is a trade block my friend, and thats it.The people that try to bullshit us by telling us europe is 'christian' are hypocrital liars, they are not christians atall, and do not hold any REAL western values. The ideas the real europe holds(or what its supposed to hold) are supposed to be civilised forward thinking values.values for humanity and peace and the progress of people right? now...who should have the right to carry those values more? the christian greek who rejects anyone non christian and wont even talk with them? or the secular turk who treats everyone equally under one banner? the fact is i dont care about the enemies of turkey who dont want turks to be europeans.i dont care because there are plenty of enlightened people in europe who embrace progress and forward thinking, and embrace the turks that share those values to.now...for us together,do we need the stubborn envious fake european and the neo nazi? no we dont. @the first poster 'European values, morals, culture and civilization are based a lot on Christianity' im sorry, did i miss something? wasnt european values, culture ect supposed to be based on the classical greeks? yes? were they christian? nope, and they did more than any christian nation ever did.
