Why are Turks against joining the EU? (Is it true)?

  • What is Turkish public opinion on joing the EU??? I am not asking about the rights and wrongs of Turkey being admited into the EU..Personally I think Turkey should be admitted to the EU and think it would be a big lose if they don't join.. But I have heard despite the Turkish government wanting to join the EU. Most ordinary Turks are now against entry when a few years ago most wanted to join it.. Why the change of opinion? Is it because of the chavanistic attitude of some EU countries..Or the length that Turkey has had to wait to join.. Wouldn't the freedom of movement and boom in trade (from membership) be a good thing for Turkey?

    This is what a Canadian friend of mine said who lives in Turkey: "The EU? Well, I'd describe the Turkey / EU dance of flirtation as a relationship that's destined to end in tears... All Turkey really seems to want is to be able to sit with the cool people in the world's high school cafeteria. If a few 'Western' countries would give Turkey a smile and a pat on the back and say, "Do you want to come to my party this Friday? Finland and Iceland will be there...", I think it would do wonders for Turkey's self-esteem! :)"

I don't want to join to Eu, as a Turk..Eu wants us to divide our country..To Kurds, Armenians, terrorists..They say change your laws because they're wrong to freedom but they accept a law which includes giving punishment who says Armenian genocide is a lie.Can u believe this?..They don't want to accept K.K.T.C..They are liars..I can't be their dog to join their simple union..But they will lose.. Sorry for my hard speech..But I'm really angry about EU.

Yes, I m definitely against the EU, becoz I dont want to see the map of Türkiye which will only have Ankara.

Turkish people still want to join. they want to join to have more freedom such as pass controls etc. but turkey has always stood in a place where many other countries want to have control. since there has been many changes in the law and etc. some people fear the loss of independance and freedom it has fought for many years.

im one of them. because Turkey has biggest 13th economy now it is growing %7 - 8 everyyear thats mean Turkey ll be 3th economy in EU 20 - 25 years later. and Turkey ll be biggest market for EU countries because Turkey ll has100 millions people 30 years later. all estimates ( this is my job) says Turkey ll be great i dont want to take risk with EU and with their complex ,unreliable, incomprehensible, stereotype agreements papers but i dont feel any bad things aganist EU because they r trying to make harmless colony this is normal for european mental but they cant able we r smarter than all i m always against joining and i ll be forever

I think they want to be able to express themselves their own way. Are they really Europeans? 97% of the land mass is in the middle east! I guess the Turkish people don't want Europeans to think they are doing them a favour

We are sick and tired of EU's double standards. EU talks about universal values, then invents new accession rules for Turkey. It admits economically and socially inferior post-communist block countries and denies even what it accepted to give (support for Turkish Cypriots?). EU is becoming more and more disfunctional every passing day and I really began to doubt what benefit it would bring me to join a loser union.

Most of the Turkish people want to join EU because of economical reasons ... Our politicians says joining to EU, a big goal for Turkish people nope ... all of them lie ... Europa never be our friend in whole history ... Europa only know divide, assimilate and exploit
