What to do on Christmas?

What about your Trinbago Christmas morning as a child?

  • OK. Well the days leading up to Christmas we doh touch nothing, 'cause is around Christmas time ah pipe buss, the fridge break, the stove ain't lighting, or we break ah window or two. It seems that around Christmas something must go wrong. Come Christmas Eve we getting excited so to cool we down we parents usta give we a Christmas Eve toy. 9 O'clock is off to bed, but you cah sleep 'cause Santa coming and yuh want to ketch him. Mommy still up vacumming, putting the curtains up, and as you lay there you could smell the bread and sweetbread baking. It was a pleasent smell as it mixed with the smell of fresh paint in the bedroom. I try to stay up but slowly drift away with thought of Christmas joy soon. Christmas morning you roll on the bed and BAM!! I would roll right into my presents 'cause Santa came and boy you know you getting at least one good toy. I would wake my brother and the joy in my heart was to much to bear. Then mom will call for breakfast, but as you look out the window you can see the rain droplets on the leaves, because it always rain Christmas morning, and the air was fresh. The family will then sit and have a Christmas breakfast, because yuh know yuh not seeing this type of breakfast again until next Christmas.

  • Answer:

TS you lucky my mother doh want nobody to touch dem gifts until after we eat breakfast then we take pictures, then we have to call everybody and line up by de phone so everybody could say Merry Christmas to whoever on the other end of the phone, but that was my mother if it was up to my father we would have opened our gifts right after we opened our eyes in de mornin. I not doing that to my son nah cuz for me that was torture back in de day.

Well boy my childhood memories on Christmas Eve was cleaning those lourves, drying dem with newspapers and making sure dey shine. Clean those ridiculous decorative blocks (it even had some on the living room wall - so yuh could see de kitchen) so dat was real blocks! The absolute worst - upacking the cabinet (full of my parents wedding wears) washing and drying them, to re pack it again! Over the years I broke a huge punch bowl, some crystal bowl, a pyrex glass kettle, two glass frying pans, several glasses, and a few dinner plates! - and they still let me clean that cabinet) Anyways, thankfully on Christmas mornings I was always pleasently surprised by my gifts! They always managed to hide them from us, because we used to dig up everywhere to find those presents!
