Do I need a international driving permit for Port of Spain Trinidad?

  • Going to be vacationing down in Port of Spain (Trinidad) and I am planning to rent a car from POS airport. Do I need a international driving permit to drive down there. Trinidad is a English speaking country and I live in New Mexico (USA) btw. Thanks for all the help!

    If you are SMART you won't try to drive in the Caribbean. It is just as cheap to take a taxi or even a gypsy taxi and you won't have to worry about breaking the law or being in an accident... and you do NOT want to get in an accident in any country in the Caribbean unless you just want to have a few days vacation at the expense of the Island Government in a special "Crossbar Hotel" they maintain for people who break their laws.

"If you are a non-resident and the holder of a valid driving permit from another country, you are entitled to drive for 90 days from the date of arrival in Trinidad and Tobago with your foreign driving permit. If your period of stay is more than 90 days, you are required to apply for a Trinidad and Tobago driving permit." This is straight off of the Government's information website

yes you would have to get one. we follow the British system so everything is different to how you would normally drive. considering it is Port of Spain i think it's better to either hire someone to drive you around, preferably someone associated with a legit company or travel. so i hope you enjoy your stay.

An International Permit is only needed to translate your local license into a language understood in the other country. So coming from US you don't need the International Permit. Just go with your US driver's permit.

You need a international driving license to drive without any problem. Generally you don't need one your license should be understandable language that's it nothing else, but its better of having international license.
