The Manitoba flag is the British Red Ensign defaced with the shield of Manitoba. The red ensign is the flag of the Royal Navy and merchant ships and was historically used as the basis for many colonial flags, including the Canadian flag until 1965. The Union flag in the upper left corner is a flag that combines the crosses of St. George (England), St. Andrew (Scotland) and St. Patrick (Ireland). The arms of Manitoba contains the buffalo, as a symbol of the many buffalo that once roamed the Manitoba prairie, topped by the Cross of St. George, representing England. With the exception of the shield, Manitoba's flag is identical to that of the Province of Ontario.
