What is the cheapest or best way to get to Winnipeg from Austin, TX?

  • I want to go to Winnipeg to visit some friends but flying from Austin, TX to Winnipeg is a bit expensive. The best rate I've been able to find so far is $598 roundtrip. So I was thinking about flying as close to the Canadian border as possible and then drive the rest of the way since my friends live close to the border. What is the best way to go about this? What city is the best choice to fly to near the border so I can make the driving as short as possible? Suggestions are welcome. Thank you in advance.

    Grand Forks ND is the closest big US city to Winnipeg. You might want to check the price of a Greyhound ticket from there to Winnipeg, or see if your friends can come down and pick you up. I understand that lots of Winnipeg area people use Grand Forks for US shopping so that might work well. Your problem might be that neither Austin nor Grand Forks are major centres for air travel. I know from experience that while you can get flights between major hubs for good prices, it starts getting much more expensive if you have to take feeder flights from smaller places. Dallas/Fort Worth to Minneapolis/St Paul is probably pretty cheap but Minneapolis is a long way from Winnipeg, further than I'd want to ask anyone to come and get me from. If you have to rent a car to get from a US airport to Canada, that will probably eat up most of the savings you make on a cheaper flight.

600.00 pretty good fare for that distance you can fly to minniaplos change planes and fly to fargo or grandforks but the flight from the twin cities to g f will cost as much as doing the whole trip. just aint no cheep way to travel driving up here is most likley the cheapest. should beable to drive here at normal speed for under 300.00 if you buy your gas in the us 2.5 days of travel. www.googlemaps.com www.yahoomaps.com and my gps all confirm the same thing.

Karen is right. It's several hours to drive from there. Keep looking for cheap seats & cheap seat sales, flying is your best option...try Grey Hound maybe if driving doesn't bother you.
