Would opening a snooker club be a viable business in Northern Ireland?

  • Would opening a snooker club be a viable business in Northern Ireland? I live in Northern Ireland and in my locality thre are no snooker clubs. I wondered what anyone's thoughts of opening one would be as a business. This is a basic posting and I am not sure of number of tables, charges per hour,membership or not and what associated add ons could be accommodated i.e. pool tables, gaming machines, bar, etc. Anyone any thoughts on turnover of similar ventures in the UK would be greatly appreciated Thanks

    Hi Youngheart, I currently own 3 snooker clubs in England & would advise you to for it if you have the funds in place to buy or lease a property big enough. I would also suggest as I have done myself to not have a licenced bar as it causes more problems than its worth to serve alcohol on your premises. The world of snooker is also about to have a big surge again now that Barry Hearn is back in the saddle so it could be quite lucrative for you in Northern Ireland. Good luck to you.

The last few years haven't been that good for Snooker & I imagine a similar scenario in NI. I have alot of family in Newry & they have one snooker club for a population of about 30,000 & you never struggle to book a table at anytime in the cue club, according to my cousin. Having an emerging talent like Mark Allen helps to promote the game in the area, as it gives new encouragement to the youngsters who have an interest in the sport & with Barry Hearn the new chairman of the WPBSA is certainly a huge step in the right direction & also Steve Davis as the players spokesperson. At the present time however, I would say no to opening a snooker business in the UK or NI, as the timing is wrong. Just wait & see if Hearn's can turn it around before investing, If he can't know one can. If it wasn't for the chinese market, I think snooker would be in a terrible situation. Mark :)
