That depends on how much you're willing to spend. If you want a decent cue thats moderately priced, a scorpion or a viking will do just fine. Now if you want better feed back on all your shots, and if you dont smack your stick around after missing a shot out of anger, a wood shaft is the way to go. The way to tell if you have a good quality shaft is to see how tight the grains of the wood fibers are. If they are tight, you have a better quality shaft. Getting back to your question, Mc Dermott makes good cues that range from just under 200, all the way up to 3 to 4 grand, but that price is do to inlays and fancy craftmanship. If you get serious about your play and perhaps join a league, you will want to invest in a quality cue. I personally shoot with predators. Those cost me an arm and a leg and through the nose, but I like the accuracy of the 314 and Z generation 2 shafts. Basically Predator, Mc Dermott, Viking, Shon, cuetech, players...to name a few, are all reputable mass manufacturer cue companies. (note:all good companies will do maintenance under quailified warrantee for the cost of shipping and handling.) Definitely check out all their websites, look at all their product, and if you get the chance, shoot a few shots with different brand cues when you go out to shoot. And if and when you get really skilled, you can invest in a custom cue like a Jacobi, or a J Pechauer. There's a lot more I can talk about cues, but its all personal preference and your style of play. Wood shafts require extra care than fiberglass or graphite cues as they can warp, absorb moisture etc. but in the end, any experienced player will say wood shafts are the way to go. Good luck. Hope you find a good cue that fits you.

Meucci is the correct spelling. I have 2 of them and they have very low deflection. McDermott do have lifetime warranties, but all that means is if you have any warps you can send it in and get it replaces in only 6 - 8 weeks of time. Jacoby (Ja-Kobe) - are very nice cues as well. Pechauer are great cues made in Wisconsin. There are many independent cue makers out there. If you can find one they could possibly make you a cue of your own for a couple hundred bucks all the way to 1000's.

I shoot with Jacoby cues and wouldn't use anything else. All hand made and can do complete custom to your preference. The can range in price from around $250 for lower end cues or thousands for 1 of a kind custom cues. Also I like that they only make a low number of cues a year, unlike McDermott, Viking, Predator and others which you are very likely to see others shooting with the same cue as you because they put out so many of them.

I play alot of pool and I use a cuetec sst. Its cheap a little over a hundred bucks, check them out they are nice and you can be more accurate with a shaft that is the same width all the way down the shaft, sorry didnt mean to sound gay.
