How does a winter sport discipline get 'showcased' in the Winter Olympics?

• We have all been treated to new events such as Board and Ski Cross,Paralell Giant Slalom,etc and they are now fully integrated winter olympic events but not so long ago they were not a part of Winter Olympics at all. There are other 'Fringe' winter sport disciplins that if given the chance could also be a part of future Winter Olympics. What criteria do they need to get 'showcased' at a winter Olimpics?

  #1 The sports discipline needs to first have a world championships meaning that all the sports you mentioned are part of the snow boarding and freestlye skiing WC'S. #2 Sports must be governed by a recognized governing sport federation. In the the case of snowboarding and freestyle skiing they are under the control of the FIS- International Ski Federation in Olympic competition. #3 You need to have at least 25 countries participating in the winter sporting discipline as an active member of the International Sport Federation. #4 Last and most important IOC Olympic Programme Commission recommends the sport discipline to be included on the Olympic Programme. This is how mixed doubles in Tennis and some new Track cycling events where added to the London 2012 Olympics. In the case of Rugby 7's and Golf IOC Olympic Programme held a vote pick these two sports over 5 others and then the IOC members voted to approve this decision for RIO 2016 Olympics. There's other criteria as well , but these are the 3 most basic.
