Where can I watch the MLS games?

Will you boycott the Olympic games: refuse to watch them? Should NBC & the athletes follow suit?

  • I see that the ever "beneficent" Chinese government is now suppressing international media in direct violation of terms set w/ the International Olympic Committee: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080608/ap_on_sp_ol/oly_china_tv_coverage_curbs I have ALWAYS loved the Olympic games, but I refuse to watch these games. The IOC simply made a HUGE mistake in allowing China to host these games, and now they're paying the price as is NBC. In essence what the Chinese have been doing to their own citizens, the people of Tibet, the people of Burma (for the Chinese government support of the regime there), now that they "have" the games, they turn their dictatorial splendor on the very body that granted them the games and on the media that they hoped would show what a "modern" country they are. I CALL ON ALL ATHLETES TO LEAD THE BOYCOTT OF THE GAMES & REFUSE TO COMPETE. You should NOT watch these games, force a financial disaster on NBC & their advertisers.

  • Answer:

Actually, allowing China to host the Olympic games has been a good thing. Look at the increase of international attention it has brought to China. Increasing awareness of the Chinese authoritarian government and its human rights violations against its citizens is a good thing. But, what would boycotting the Olympics accomplish? Why punish the athletes who have worked so hard to get there? Why punish the Chinese athletes? The games are going to go on regardless, so why not watch the games and support the athletes? You can still watch the games and choose not to purchase products from NBC's advertisers. I plan on watching the games. For those who want to boycott the Olympics, I think a more effective way would be to boycott products made in China. Instead of refusing to watch the games, refuse to purchase products made in China. Look around your house. How many items do you own that come from China? What about the food you consume? Less than 1% of food sold in the US comes from China, but that translates into more than 50% of garlic that is sold here comes from China, 45% of apple juice, 19% of honey, 16% of seafood and 9.6% of wheat gluten. In addition, $29 million worth of our fresh or frozen fruit and $131 million worth of our fresh or frozen vegetables comes from China. Those are 2006 figures. Still, that's a lot of food. Consumers need to be aware and pay more attention. Here's a tip on how to tell if the garlic you buy is coming from California or China. In California they cut the roots off but leave a little bit of a brush. In Chinese garlic they cut the root plate off flat, with no brush.

What does boycotting NBC and advertisers have to do with the Chinese government and their politics? There is no logical connection there whatsoever. I intend to watch the Olympics. I pray that China finds a way to move away from authoritarianism, into a more "modern" form of government. Boycotting NBC won't affect that at all.

No, it's your choice whether too not mine. By boycotting the games by one person...it's not going to matter. 1 person 1-voice amongst the crowd your not going to be heard.

Let's say that everyone decides to boycott the Olympics. Do you *honestly* think that the Chinese leadership will change their policies because of this? As much as I don't like what China is doing, boycotting the Games is like pissing into the wind.

No, I won't. The Olympic Games are a chance in a lifetime. I love watching 'em.
