Sled-dog racing contests were displayed at Lake Placid in 1932. Add dogs to anything and normally you’ll have a hit on your hands. But for some reason, dogsledding, one of just two sports in Winter Olympics history where the equipment could bark back, has never made it beyond its status as a demonstration sport in the 1932 Lake Placid games. Western’s Barney says it may have been a question of money that resulted in the sport never gaining traction. Dogs, after all, are a lot harder to pack across the world than a pair of figure skates. “Dog-sledding was too darn expensive,” Barney said. “It’s like equestrian events. There are also quarantines of animals some times.” The International Federation of Sled dog Sports had been agitating for a second chance and pushed for dog sledding to appear somewhere in the course of Vancouver’s games, but a 2010 spokeswoman says it will not appear on the program. It is hard to say whether Fido will ever officially make it onto the podium.

It may have been considered. I'm just not sure it would meet the competition requirements to be an Olympic sport.

It is an interesting question, considering that in the Summer Olympics they have equestrian events.

Because the French only have access to Poodles and the Snow ruins their stylish looks. Wiener Dogs are really cute and fun to own. But they are too small to pull a sled so the Germans are out. Don't even get me going with the Mexicans and their Chihuahuas. You just know they would come in dead last.

It was a demo event in 1932. I wish it was a regular event. I have a Husky Dog. It would be like the Equestrian events in the Summer Games.

The Olympic determine the skill and strength of humans not dogs. Also animal rights activists hate the sport because it is cruel to dogs, when on the contrary they enjoy it.
