Answer:
Well, I am on gymnastics team, and I think the best way to make sure you get a back handspring is to go to the local gym. There they have the equipment such as barrels, handspring trainers and safe foam pits to start out in. You might learn it by yourself but its always easier with a coach.

Go to your local gym. PLEASE, don't try to learn it yourself. I cannot stress how important it is to make sure you have proper training. It won't take long. Three weeks is plenty, but find a gym, and get private lessons so you can tell the coach that your main purpose is a back handspring. If you are iffy about the local gyms you know about, most gyms on this directory are trustworthy: http://www.usa-gymnastics.org/pages/finda/club.html?prog=ms. Again, please don't try at home. The consequences will FAR outweigh the gain.

well i am on a gymnastics team and i can already do one and u would have to be very strong in your arm and legs muscules. it took me a long time to get it and i am a very strong person u would have to train at least 2 days a week at the gym if u want to get the backhandspring quickly. is ur friend a gymnast or are u just wanting to learn it and she knows how? also i wouldnt practice outside of the ym unless u r willing for the possibility to get hurt because when i was trying to do them i decided to practice at home and nearly broke my neck
This sounds pretty dangerous to me. I'm sure it's possible, but you have to be careful. I would use a trampoline to do this. That way you get a bounce and have a lesser chance of injury. I would start with a back flip, then move toward a back handspring. Also, have a spotter to help you kick you legs over. Be cautious! Good luck!
it is not impossible but you have to start on something soft and you have to make sure you have strong arms or you might land on your head and i am in gymnastics so i know this.... do some push ups to make your arms strong that will help if you don't have good upper body strength the firs time you try it you might want some one to help you though

you have to be strong or you will get hurt, start on something soft, have a friend with you at all times to help you with your center till you get it down.
