Which South-East Asian countries actually pay their professional athletes?

Do you think that American only pay attention to their American athletes in the Olympics but never pay?

  • attention to other country's athletes? I mean I read so many comments from American fans that how impressive their American athletes, but never pay attention to other country's athletes. Like in the 2010 Olympics Women's short track, everybody in America was saying how great Apolo Ohno and Katherine Reutters are, but never mentioned how great China's Wang Meng, who setted Short Track history by winning the most Gold and medals. Even in Beijing Olympics, where China got the most medal, but American fans don't care about it at all because of Michael Phelps, Usain Bolts and other American athletes. So do you think that besides American athletes, the American don't care about other country's athletes? I mean you hear other country's fans having other country's athletes as their idol, but rarely in American where they have other country's athletes as their idol

  • Answer:

Its very natural for people to pay extra close attention to the athletes of their own country but right in your own question you mentioned about people from the United States cheering for Usain Bolt and he is from Jamaica and not the United States. There were many americans cheering for Eddie the eagle during the Calgary games and he from England . Another example would be Sonja Henie had many american fans and she was from Norway. Every games there are those athletes that will have a widespread following and they will have legions of fans from around the world.

I disagree. I'm always watching other athletes. As a gymnast, I can say that Anna Pavlova, Dasha Joura, Catalina Ponor, and Andreea Raducan are some of my favorite athletes, none of which come from the United States. Of course during the Olympics everyone is rooting for their own country, and there's nothing wrong with that - I understand each country wanting to comment on their own athletes, especially when something huge happens, as with Michael Phelps. It's exciting. During the Beijing Olympics, of COURSE I was rooting for Nastia Liukin and Shawn Johnson, but I paid very close attention to all the other talented athletes as well and was extremely happy for their successes.

To a degree yes, but that's more the fault of NBC than anything else. They don't give a crap about live coverage unless a prominent American is competing, otherwise its highlights of what other American athletes have done.

ANSWER SAURUS

The main reason is t.v. the American t.v. networks refuse to admit anyone other than U.S. athletes are competing. It is the most frustrating thing to watch the Olympics and have to endure hours of profiles of athletes who don't have a chance to medal rather than watching the events. Unless someone follows a particular sport they have no way of knowing or understanding foreign athletes. Many Americans do have an interest in the sport, not just the American athletes, but unless you attend the Games you are not going to be able to see an event unless an American has a chance to medal. The producers decide what you get to watch regardless of what you want to watch.
