Summer Olympics question?

Should there be a limit on how often one nation can host the Olympics?

  • I've been watching all the disappointment (and in some cases outrage - Chicago 2016 Facebook group) at Chicago missing out on the Olympics in 2016 to Rio. Am I really the only one who would have thought it was outrageous for a US city to host the Olympics again so soon after Atlanta? I mean c'mon, the US has hosted the summer games on what, four occasions? A couple of other nations have had two, then a bunch with one and a heckuva lot with zero. Part of the magic for me is the sharing around and seeing different places as a backdrop to the Olympics So - I pose the question, should there be some sort of minimum time between olympic hosting for each nation?

  • Answer:

No! The Olympics should be in Athens Greece every four years.

no. they shouldn't do that. as long as it's not consecutive. what gives the IOC the right to ban a country from bidding to host an olympics because they just had one a couple olympics ago? they can vote them off if they want but not to deny them the right.

One of the reasons Chicago and Madrid did not get it.

not necessary a limit on how many times one can have the Olympic and Paralympics. There are question on how the host nation will host the Paralympic games and by not wanting to host the Paralympic games will mean no olympic games. As the Olympic and Paralympic committes sign an agreement that they both be in the same city. There also many country that has not held the Olympic and Paralympic games onces. I had a great time going and supporting the Paralympic athletes in Sydney. So I am glad for South American to have the same chance I had

I agree with you on a certain grace period before a country which has hosted the game to be allowed to host it again for the next time. Olympics is the only event that involves participation from almost all nations on earth. More countries should be given the chance to host this game provided they are capable to do the job. I was happy that Chicago was not selected for the 2016 games. Why should IOC allow America to host their 5th Olympics when the whole continent of Latin America and Africa have yet to host a single games. In the past these regions might not be ready to host such a big event but this time Rio is ready so it was fair to give the city the host job. Infact i think Chicago shouldn't have been shortlisted in the first place
