I wouldn't think so, A medal of that size in pure gold would be extremely heavy, probably about 10 ounces. At US$1,250 an ounce for gold at the moment it would make each medal US$12,500 each, multiply that by the amount of gold medals given out and you've got a huge expense there's 302 events in the olympics but when you think of things like the rowing 8s where all of them get a medal, or the gymnastics team where they all get a medal, the amount of medals produces would probably be closer to 400. 400 x US$12,500 is $US5,000,000. I think the idea of silver medals that are plated is more realistic. A medal of silver that size would only weigh about 3 ounces and at $US20 an ounce for silver would make each medal only $60 to produce, x 400 is US$24,000

Gold medals are gold coloured and generally gold plated to last but not pure gold. The Gold Medals to some countries are more valuable than gold....the winner get a million dollars (e.g. Spore or Malaysia ...half a million)
