How did you react when Rio de Janeiro received the 2016 Summer Olympic Games?

  • On October 2, 2009, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil was awarded the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Copenhagen, Denmark by defeating Madrid, Chicago and Tokyo for the XXXI Olympiad. This will be the first time the Summer Olympics will be held in South America. When Rio de Janeiro got awarded the Summer Olympics, how did you react knowing that South America will be hosting the Summer Olympics for their first time in the continents history? When Rio de Janeiro was awarded the Olympics, I was excited that they got the Olympics. I supported Chicago for the Olympics but since they did not get the Olympics, I wanted Rio to host the games since this would be the first time South America would host the Summer Olympic Games. I hope that in 2020, the continent of Africa can host the Summer Olympics, that way the Olympics will finally be held on every continent in the world.

    Three cheers for Rio!!!! I'm glad they got it, and I hope it is a huge success. I wasn;lt aware this is the first time the Olympics will be held in S America, You make good sense. Africa., take notes and maybe we'll be saying "Three cheers for Africa": in ther future. PS We had it in Atlanta , 1996.

I think deep down as Rio lost the 2012 bid they where given this one. I am glad for Rio, Brazil and South America!

I was very happy. I wasn't sure how Chicago could market itself or present itself to the world the way any of the other three could. The history and culture of Brazil will have a grand stage to perform for all.

to MIGUEL although the river have so many bad things as you sitou I think it was good to give them a orpotunidade to Brazil and generally south america you like Brazilian feleiz should be reviewed in not doing so for people from other countries ... .......... They played the sob story about how South America has never hosted it and it was all over. You knew they were going to get it. I wasn't aware that Antarctica has hosted an Olympics. Barry - Atlanta is in North America.

Well we planned a sob story, and cried like little girls we want south America, why you never us a chance....waaaaa waaa waaaa Do you really think we can compete with Chicago, Tokyo or Madrid? Our economy are not well develop, we have super slums EVERYWHERE and the crime and drug consumption is way higher than yours Everyone in the streets cheering and dancing that we won. but what they don't see, is the cost.... London is finding out now how much it really cost to have the infrastructure and games set up... not to mention we are also hosting the 2014 world cup... Our developing country with huge depts just got itself a big one this time, and all we recieve is billions of dollars in tourism and plublicity for the billions more we will spent to host it. Not a smart idea in reality, be glad ur not hosting it America...
