  • ok, so why are there no MLB baseball players on the US baseball olympic team, but the basketball team is made up of all NBA players? what is the rule on who can or can not join olympic team? thanks

    basketball season is played in the winter, but is an olympic summer sport therefore you don't have to turn off a guaranteed money machine in the middle of a season. baseball is not going to put a stop in it's season for two weeks, to allow their players to travel to so far away place and risk getting hurt, when pennant races are just about to heat up. If Alex Rodriguez or David Ortiz left in the middle of a pennant race, to play what amounts to a meaningless tournament(as is the World Baseball Classic), and blow their ACL or break an arm and be lost for the season. I'd be pretty pissed if I was a Yankee or Red Sox fan looking forward to the play-offs. That said, NBA players, Tennis Players and Soccer players shouldn't be allowed either, the olympics should be for amateurs only, like the old days.

how can you not recognize something that doesn't exist? there is no USA baseball team at the olympics because they dropped baseball as a sport. this is the last year for softball. But, as others said, MLB would not allow players to take 2-3 weeks off for the olympics anyway.

Because, my friend, when the olympics are on in the middle of summer, baseball season is still in session. So the IOC can not afford to ask players from MLB to attend the Olympics and postponed baseball in the process. Good luck

i believe mlb players are not allowed to participate and also they are in the middle of their season and are obligated to their contracts
