When do the swimming world championships start?

Usain Bolt's False Start DQ in Daegu will provide a change in London 2012?

  • Track & Field Fans, With the World Championships in Daegu, South Korea coming to an unflattering finish due to Bolt's False Start DQ, .. .. .. Q 1. Will the USOC finally kill their stupid One-&-Done False Start Rule for the upcoming London 2012 Summer Games? Q 2. Is the One-&-Done False Start Rule UNFAIR to the athletes? Q 3. Was the One-&-Done False Start Rule created ONLY for the media and television markets (aka MONEY) so as to appease impatient audiences? Q 4. Hypothetically speaking: Which is better, having a One-&-Done False Start effected 100m Final in the London 2012 Games WITHOUT Usain Bolt? Or having a NEW rule that allows each Sprinter one false-start? Q 5. Last but NOT LEAST, had Bolt not false started, is it safe to say he would have won the Daegu Men's 100m Final given his prelim times? As a former Track athlete, I for one HATE the One-&-Done Rule for False Starts and feel it was created solely for the impatient television audiences IMPAIRED by millisecond-sound-byte attention spans.

  • Answer:

A1. The One & Done false start is an IAAF rule and not a USOC rule. I am certain they are going to have many complaints from fans and television broadcasters that are worried that other situations like this may occur remember other sprint finals are still to be completed in Daegu and the broadcasters biggest nightmare is to have major stars eliminated in this manner at the Olympic games. A 2. Yes the rule is very unfair it doesn't take into account nerves tension pumping adrenaline. The rule makes no allowance for those human reactions to stress, for honest mistakes. After all a delay of as little as a 1/5 of a second can be the difference between finishing in 1st or 6th place. A3. The rule was created because of impatient fans both television and live audiences. A4. It is better to have a complete field compete but I do remember the frustration of numerous false starts. A5. If Usain Bolt had not false started I believe there was a 98% chance he would have won he had looked very dominant in the earlier rounds.
