Am i the only Brit who thinks it was a bad thing london got the olympics?
-
I am actually from London for a start, but i feel that perhaps it wasnt the best idea giving london the olympics after all Wembley was a year late with seats that faded in the sun, with all the political interference and stupid bureacracy there's an argument it was a bad bad idea for us to win, besides Europe had its turn not so long ago didnt it? How many other Brits and others think that it maybe was a mistake London getting the 2012 games?

Answer:
You are by no means the only Londoner and Brit who thinks the London Olympics are a very bad idea. I can just about remember the last time we had the Olympics here in London in 1948 when I was seven years old. It was at least a proper games and very armature, but a bit of a shambles what with all the war damage and so on. It did not cost Londoners a single penny. The whole event was paid for by the business community and it was cheap to get in. I think even the top seats were only about 50pence, ten shillings in those days. About the price of an away-day ticket to Manchester from London. We Londoners are going to pay for these 2012 games for ever, or so it seems. Worse still, we're going to be left with a pile of white elephants which no one wants. Remember the Dome? Described by the art critic Mr Sewell as a 'tent'; and so it is. Anyone wishing to know what happens after the Olympic Games have gone away only has to visit the fabled city of Athena to see the open spaces unoccupied buildings and the whole sorry mess. I have posted a reply at the Yahoo section which deals with the horrible Nazi style new London Olympics logo. I strongly advise you wear dark glasses before viewing the thing. It is loud, vulgar and common. It cost £50K to produce. Meanwhile gyms across the UK are closing for lack of funding. What crap is that? Edit: Star above is quite right. The only place to hold the Olympics is at a permanant site in Greece. How about somewhere near Mount Olympus? The Games could then start with the lighting of the Olympic Flame on top of Mount Olympus from the rays of the sun. The flame could then be raced to the Olympic Stadion by teams of runners from all over the world; to enter the Stadion held aloft by a lone Greek runner. Fabulous. It's not going to happen because they would lose their gravy train. Think of it, the Marathon actually taking place on the original course, across the plain of Marathon from Sparta to Athena. Should it be done in fully body armour and the winner drop dead at the finish, do you think? At least it would be authentic. How about Seb Coe? Tis Olympiagy (To the Olympics).

The government is already diverting millions out of other public budgets to pay for this fiasco, arts funding nationally is being cut by millions to help pay for this as are sports & other budgets. People are going to suffer professionally & emotionally because of the Olympics, and already we have seen the effects of having so much public money thrown into the Olympics. A very expensive new logo that nobody in the world actually likes, and looks like it was drawn by a 3 year old. With inspiration from the SS logo: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Flag_Schutzstaffel.svg Next no doubt we will get the IT system designed to handle the Olympics costing millions over budget & not working properly & not ready in time, along with all the other cost overruns & every spivs on the block making money out of public funds. The whole thing should be stopped now before this country is bled dry to pay for it, and all the excesses that have & will be taken in the name of the Olympics. some the money would be far better spent getting couch potatoes who will watch the Olympics on TV, out and exercising........and yes watch your tax bills rising steadily in the next few years. BTW a point of information : the dome was actually instigated by the last Tory government - the incoming Labour government had a choice of scrapping it or carrying on- you know what they did.....

yes and the argument is after the Olympics they will sell the land to developers for more houses but why not cut out the middle man and just regenerate east London the proper way it nearly crippled Greece it will probably do the same to us

The Olympics are good news for cities that need publicity. London doesn't need putting on the map - but we will need more than the revenue from a few thousand tourists to offset the cost. Okay, we'll have the sports facilities when the Games are over. So don't we have enough already ? If not, do we need so many extra sports facilities so badly that it's worth paying £9 billion (and rising) for them ?

I just worry that it makes an even bigger target for the bad people in this world. Think how many people will be in one area at the same time. I think most countries have a bad reputation for delays while building things, its not just a british thing.

My worry is that after the Olympics many of the purpose built venues will have to be mouth balled as they have done in Athens because of the upkeep and costs associated with keeping these places viable. My personal view is that the Olympics ought to held in the one country all the time for example.......Athens this would make sense instead of countries getting into deep debt each time the Olympics are held.

Britain is getting a worse and worse... Britain will probably win 3 gold medals only in 2012... London is over-rated...

Let's face it the Olympics has nothing to do with sport. It is just a way of more developers lining their pockets. Apart from the huge over budget Wembley have we all forgot already that fiasco called the Millenium Dome which cost the taxpayers a billion pounds but was sold off by the government to one of their pet developers for a tenner?

I agree with Ya, anybody who lives outside of London will not get one ounce of benefit from these games, but the Government are quite happy to take our taxes to pay for the damn thing....

Hello, (ANS) Personally I'm dreading the 2012 Olympics, Its a huge WASTE of tax payers money. It will also be like collective UK brainwashing, the media on every level & every channel will be broadcasting the Olympics or sport. YAK!! were is the choice for those that don't follow the religion of sport? **What if you DON'T like or follow sport? well you might as well leave the UK during 2012 if you don't want to suffer it. Its collective insanity, mass hysteria just like princess Diana's wedding, Diana's death ,etc. **The money should have been spent on sorting out much more worthy projects & issues like the desperate shortage of low cost social housing in the capital & else where in the UK. **How about spending the money on improved sporting facilities in every UK major town & city NOT just London. That would be a far better legacy in my view. **Ordinary people like me never got asked if I wanted the Olympics? of course the ordinary person in the street doesn't matter, yet another over blown Blair legacy don't you know. Just like the Dome!!. IR
