For and against why the Bejing Olympics were a good thing for China?Please help?!?

I thought it was an incredibly good thing. The Olympics were able to achieve what China had intended, as a showcase of the new modern China, breaking it free from the illusions many of us in the West had about China. We saw it for the modern and powerful country it now is. For Chinese athletes it too was incredible. The official way to decide who tops the Olympic medal tally is by number of gold medals. China had the most gold medals, for the first time ever in the Beijing Olympics, giving a real boost to sporting and athleticism throughout China after the success of the games. For many individual athletes it was also great, the largest example I can think of the womans artistic gymnastics team of China, who had over the last 20 years, never had a 1st place finish, until the Beijing Olympics, where they beat the American team by a large margin, the victory instilling a sense of pride amongst the athletes. The economy was not largely effected by the games. While they cost a huge amount of money (15 - 40 billion dollar estimate, the most expensive games ever), China had this money as a huge surplus, and the positive implications for the economy towards the future will likely counter this cost at least a little. While they Olympics did highlight some of the shortcomings of China (namely human rights), it largely benefited them by showcasing the modern, powerful China we know today, instilling a sense of pride amongst the Chinese athletes and people together.
