What are limitations of using a gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer when testing athletes for drugs?

Why doesnt olympics practice mandatory drug testing for medal winners?

  • In light of the current Austrian and Russian teams drug scandal in Turin 06. Wouldn't mandatory drug testing for medal winners reduce the chance of using drugs? I mean, if a contestant is faced with "If I win using drugs then I would get tested and hence stripped of my medal", then it is likely that he/she would not take drugs in the first place! (Why else would you do it, if not for medals?)

  • Answer:

They do... all winners have to submit to a drug test upon winning their medals. However, some performance enhancing drugs can be out of the system by the time that the drug testing takes place. So, there are surprised raids and dopping tests throughout the competition.
