What qualifies a sport for the Olympics?

What does a sport need in order to be included in the Olympics?

  • I know that The sport must be practiced by men in at least 75 countries and four continents, and by women in at least 40 countries and three continents. The sport in question must have a governing International Federation in order for the IOC to offically recognize them as a sport. but what does The sport in question must have a governing International Federation in order for the IOC to offically recognize them as a sport. mean? Would dance qualify to become a sport in the Olympics? why or why not?

  • Answer:

Technically speaking, dance could very well be a sport for consideration as an Olympic sport. It would first have to by voted for though by the IOC for final approval, and then be added to the Olympic program as a demonstration only sport before making it onto the official program in the following Olympics. So if it does get approved today, it won't be able to be an official sport until the 2016 Olympics at the earliest, having been a demonstration sport at the 2012 Olympics. It is too late to be added as a demonstration sport for the 2008 Olympics.

In order to promote the Olympic Movement, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) may recognise as International Sports Federations (IFs) international non-governmental organisations administering one or several sports at world level and encompassing organisations administering such sports at national level. In order to be recognised, these organisations must apply the Olympic Movement Anti-Doping Code and conduct effective out-of-competition tests in accordance with the established rules. The recognition of IFs newly recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) shall be provisional for a period of two years or any other period fixed by the IOC Executive Board. At the end of such period, the recognition shall automatically lapse in the absence of definitive confirmation given in writing by the IOC. As far as the role of the IFs within the Olympic Movement is concerned, their statutes, practice and activities must be in conformity with the Olympic Charter. Subject to the foregoing, each IF maintains its independence and autonomy in the administration of its sport. International DanceSport Federation is in fact recognized by the IOC, but maybe beacuse of the weak lobbying it has never been included at the Olympics

It comes down to a popularity vote of members on the committee. You already know what it takes to be a sport in the Olympics. There are many things that I do not accept as sports that are a part of the Olympics, and some sports that are not a part of the Olympics.

I think ballroom dancing was a sport (and may still be) in the summer olympics. Baseball was just recently dropped so what does that tell you.
