How do you measure a saddle?

an all purpose english saddle. say i have the saddle right in front of me right now but dont know how many inches it is. how do i find out how many inches it is? do i just take a ruler and measure how many inches from the pommel to the very end of the seat (cantel i think)? please help :)

Place your tape measure at the cantle, then run the measurement at an angle to the nail head or rivet visible at the front of the saddle skirt.
