My back hurts after horseback riding?

I'm getting back into horseback riding. What do i need to know?

  • I rode for eight years with both western and english.I'm going to start up with a Working Student program so i will be working in the barn and riding. I rode up until i was thirteen or fourteen. I'm now seventeen. What should i buy? What do I need to remember? My helmet doesn't fit so i would love to know a really good brand. I also need new boots and pants. Any info would be so much help!

Well it really depends on whether the barn you are riding and working is english or western. If it is english you would need some paddock boots, half chaps, and jodhpurs or breeches. If it is western I would recommend some riding specific jeans such as Q Babies by Wrangler (look at any tack shop for more brands) and some cowboy style riding boots (good brands are typically Ariat, Boulet, Justin...). For both disciplines you are going to want a helmet. As helmets go what is most important is that it fits well and is safety certified. I personally ride in a Troxel but I know other people who ride in International and Tippery. Those are all good helmets that are appropiate for schooling that aren't too expensive. If the barn is both english and western you could get away with using your paddock boots when riding western if you did not want to purchase two sets of boots. If you are also working I would purchase a pair of boots or shoes for mucking out stalls since you most likely wont want to wear your riding boots. Any shoes will work of course or you can get some special http://www.muckbootsandshoes.com/. Best of luck!

Ok first off don't wear jeans! I have had bad experience with them. YOu always ride with a helmet no matter what! Your shoes should be riding boots not sneakers to the heel can stay securely in the stirrup. When you're riding remember to sit up straight and tall, arch your back a little bit. Shut Up And Ride

There's a packing list for equestrian vacations from Equitrekking, the PBS horse riding show. That may help you know what to buy/wear, but it doesn't name brands. http://www.equitrekkingtravel.com/index.php/blog/entry/packing_blog_post/ The host Darley has got more tips on horse riding at http://www.equitrekking.com/Blogs/5/Travel-Tips.html I know from experience that Ariat is a good brand for boot and pants! Have fun working and riding!

well i prefer western sattles because they fit better on my horses, and are more comfy to me. for the boots and pants i don't know any good brands because i don't show horses or do competetions. Make sure to buy bug spray for them because when they get bugs in their eyes they freak out.

I really like the Tipperary helmets, but you'll just have to try some on to see what you like. If I were you I'd get some paddock boots and half-chaps (some people call them leggins). You can do your barnwork in the paddock boots (if you want) and then just put on your half-chaps to ride. I wear Ariats and Treadstep half-chaps, or a custom- made pair. You can wear paddock boots and half-chaps with jeans or breeches, so that's versatile. Also, to start with, there's no problem riding English in jeans. I wouldn't buy breeches yet, if I were you. And if you're riding western, you won't need half-chaps because the saddles have fenders rather than stirrup leathers. Have fun!!
