How can I convince my parents to let me take horse riding lessons?

  • I go to this school and we just came back from Project Week. I picked the option to stay in the country to do some Equestrian. I have never rode on a horse before, much less trotted on it and the experience changed my life. We just came back and I tried convincing my parents to let me take horse riding lessons but, the thing is, the lessons are really expensive. I had this argument with my mom to let me take horse riding lessons, saying that my favorite thing was to ride horses. Unfortunately, she said that ever since she was little, she loved to study and now she had to abandon it all and come to this city with my dad. The problem is not how expensive it is, its just my parents are much more willing to spend the money on other important things. Another problem is that the stable place I want to go to is so far away from my house, but the director of that stable is willing to send a driver to our school to pick us up and take us back, but my mom still says no, so I don't know how to convince her. So, yeah, I really want to ride horses here before I move to a different place. I would be so so so grateful for any help!! :D Thanks(:

Something you could do is offer a work exchange. A work exchange is when you work at a barn, and they reward you efforts by letting you ride! You don't have to pay for it! As for your mom, you just have to let her know that this is what you want to do! You can use arguments like "working with animals makes you responsible" and stuff like that! Riding changed my life too! I really feel like my self around horses! These animals can really make you a better person! Hope I helped!!!!!!!!!! Best of Luck!!!!!!!!!!<3 Edit: You might get some more answers to your question if you post it in Pets > horses!

The responsibility argument almost always works, trust me. ;) That one, plus go with the whole "being around horses and riding will keep me out of trouble after school" - that one goes over pretty well. And yes, someone mentioned joining a horse club. I joined US Pony Club 5 years ago; it's the best thing I ever did. I've improved so much and learned a ton, I'm now going to the University of KY for pre-vet medicine and equine science. And let me tell you, most of the knowledge I have going into college is thanks to pony club. Even if you don't join, buy their manuals - they're awesome.

You have to woo your parents. Start to do extra work around the house. Do things before they ask you and finish things on time. Be polite and respectful. At the same time, give subtle hints. If you have a computer, while you are on it, keep a tab of a horse site like FEI of USEF up. When your parents walk in, switch to that browser. Ask if you could have a subscription to Practical Horseman for christmas. Make sure you research horses and the equestrian sport in general to sound knowledgeable; you don't want your parents to think that this is just a phase of your life. Whenever they sit you down to talk about how mature you have become or are becoming, ask them to CONSIDER your horse idea. Say that you are really interested in this and that you will try to help with the costs. You must be very convincing.
