Answer:
My relative started barrel racing when she was in her 30's and she wins all the time. She has been riding horses since she was a kid, but barrel racing was new to her as an adult. Her daughter took it up at your age and has done quite well in competitions. Horses can be a very expensive sport, but it depends on what type of riding, etc. The price of gear, lessons, etc in part depends on where you live and what type of riding you want to do. See if there are any summer programs near you, maybe through community centers or other organizations. Sometimes you can take care of horses, like for a private party or a camp or stable, in exchange for lessons and riding time. That's what my relative did when she was a teen, she worked out and groomed horses for a busy couple, in exchange for getting to ride them. I was taught by my uncle's ex-girlfriend (who had competed so she knew what she was doing) for a very low price. She was very nice so I called her up for advice (even though they were broken up) on where to take lessons and she offered to teach me. Talk to people who might know, don't be shy about asking questions. Google: Horseback riding lessons, Your City and also: Horse Stables, Your City and you should come up with info on camps, stables, lessons, etc. Then you call and ask them for all the details when you know what type of riding you want to do. Good luck!

Horseback riding is such an amaizing thing! I can tell you from experience that I was in the same boat as you. I saw my sister riding and really wanted to try it ... but the money was a problem. here's some info .. consider the following: * You'll need a helmet - riding without one is just dangerous and I advise you buy one. They can be pretty pricy. Depends from where you get one, you can also go to a second hand store that sells horse stuff and pick one up for a cheaper price * Riding boots - You'll need boots with a heel to be able to ride as you need to stick your heels down while you ride. Most times for beginners you can use any closed toe boot with a heel. * Riding rate - Riding can be pricy. I used to pay 40/session and went once a week. * Gear - chances are that if you're going to a place to ride then they'll supply all the tack for you p.ex saddle, bridal, brushes etc. & Most importantly you're not too old! If it's something you dream of doing than you can make it happen. My sister started riding at the age of 25 since she couldn't afford it when she was younger. Now she's become such a great rider she's doing horse shows & has gotten real good. It's never too late! & Don't give up! Best of luck!

i think it's a great idea! i started riding when i was 14, but you could ride at whatever age. riding tends to be expensive though. it depends on where you are, but i imagine that it's pretty expensive in the U.S., although i really think it's worth it. after a year or two, maybe you won't need lessons anymore. just try to find an inexpensive place and rent out your gear. in fact, you can work or volunteer at a stable in exchange for lessons! =]
