Should I Switch My Riding Barn?
-
Well I've been riding at this barn for about two years. I have much much information underneath my belt. However, the dramatic skittish mare I've been stuck with has been getting me nowhere in my riding career perhaps, even holding me back. To me it seems like my instructor wants a tough fearless nut (mwah) to break in this pony for future riders, but I simply don't have the patience to continue forth as it is interfering with my goals. About the Pony: Her name is sunny she is a white welsh pony. She's around 12 or so. Last show I went to she freaked out and kicked the trailer once untied quickly the tore the lead rope from my instructor hands and bolted to the street. Of course, I had to hunt her down. She continued to run about, bothering other people's horses. Finally I had her caught, I was told not to run after her, but, once she made it a couple yards from the gate I lost it and ran for that rope as there were cars coming. I stomped on the rope and she stopped, I lead her back. Obviously, no show. The week before (my first actually successful show) she head butted me and refused to square up. After all the madness, I drug myself to the lesson the next day. As I was trotting I noticed a limp. Hopped off told my substitute instructor and she rode her for a minute and told me she was lame, from kicking and running in gravel the last day. So no lesson. So I have no idea if I even have a HORSE TO RIDE this Saturday. The other horses she has are too big, health issues, nit broke ect. Basically I have no idea what to do. There are only a couple horses I COULD POSSIBLY ride, but they, as well, will get my nowhere in my career. I have an aunt named Sally she used to be a big time rider, if I can't find another barn or if My instructor doesn't have another horse p my and my mother have considered buying a horse and taking it fir lessons and boarding at my instructors barn. I don't have a problem with my instructor, just the fact that she doesn't have many horses appropriate fir me to ride. Sorry its long, what do I do?

Answer:
It's really hard to find nice lesson horses. No lesson horse is perfect... if the horse is perfect, it's going to be someone's show horse. Lesson horses are lesson horses because they have some problems. I've found a couple horses at my barn that I like, but usually they get some green horses, use lesson riders to train them, then sell them when they're just getting good. So changing barns probably won't help. Based on the old adage of "you get what you pay for," if you find a really nice expensive barn, they'll probably have some decent lesson horses. Otherwise, you'll be running into the same problem everywhere you go. The better solution would be for you to buy your own horse. You could try out a bunch of horses and find the one that's right for you. Then you'd have the same horse for lessons and showing all the time so you could really focus on improving your riding instead of worrying about what problems your lesson horse has. Of course, buying your own horse is the expensive option, but it's the best option.

I've always had that problem, always. I got stuck with the brattiest, rudest, ponies in the barn. And often I do think, 'if I didn't get the bad ones, i'd be so much farther in my riding.' But, I have come to notice, that I have been told that I ride much, much better than those girl with perfect horses. I can ride horses no other kids can, or want to, because they've never had to deal with the endless array of bratty horses. And my experience riding bratty horses, actually led me to owning 3 of my current horses, all of which are horses who are actually fabulous one way or another, especially my main riding horse Simon. So it may seem like your not learning anything, but you may actually be learning a lot. If I didn't get the bad horses, I would actually be a worse rider and never have met my once-in-a-lifetime horse Simon. It's basically a bitter-sweet secret. Sometimes I wish for those perfect horses, but quite frankly, the imperfect one's are much more fun! And if you feel as if your getting nowhere in your training, don't be afraid to ask your instructor if you can move on, and if she says no, ask why you can't.
