Horse riders only please. Have you got any exercises to help lengthen a horses jump? ?

My pony is about 17 and when we jump she gets very close to the jump and then jumps it very big! Is there any exercises that could help her lengthen her jump? Please feel free to add some links. Thankyou :-)

Answer:
Try half halting her as you approach. Make sure you approach in a balanced trot/canter depending which you do. If you are trotting make sure it is with a purpose with lots of springy energy but not rushed. And in canter make sure she's not letting herself get all lengthened out - keep her together and keep the canter 3 beat and springy You can also try poles before a small jump to make her concentrate on timing her steps - it also helps you count the strides in before the jump. If you can count the last 3 strides it focuses your mind which can (subconsciously) tell your horse that - like when you plan you will trot at say C and you prepare yourself. The horse knows it's going to do something so is ready.

What you can do, is practice making her lengthen her stride when you're doing your flat work. (I make my pony do this by kicking very gently with my inside leg, but I don't know if yours will respond in the same way) Then you can make her lengthen her strides when you're going into the fence, and hopefully, she should jump a bit longer! If it doesen't work, try the info on this website http://forum.equisearch.com/forums/t/1866.aspx. The answer is a bit long, but it's worth it! Hope I helped, good luck, happy jumping! :) xxx

Try a ground-pole about 1-2 feet in front of the jump. The point is for her to get her to jump sooner. This will force her to lengthen her jump.

Good jumping begins with good flatwork. Work with her so you can control her length of stride on the flat, playing around with each gait in turn until you can get collected, working, medium and extended versions of each. Then progress this to working over trotting and canter poles, varying the distance between the poles as you gain more accurate control. Once she is attentive and you are definitely in control, put up a small cross pole and get her popping it perfectly, using a placing pole one stride away on either side. When you get this perfect, progress onto a double of small fences. It's also a good idea to keep your jumping to trotting pace, then you will be more able to control the speed than in canter. Best of luck!

Half halting a few strides in from of the jump, try a pole a few feet away from the jump and also try a double or triple with a stride in-between. As you reach the ground pole a few feet away from the jump squeeze and this will encourage her to respond to your leg by jumping further out. If the jump isn't a spread like yours my horse rides in too deep and tends to knock a pole.or even a tap on the shoulder with a stick.

I ride a lot and I take lessons. Half halting a few times can help, and also try cantering in circles. Depending on the height of the jump, (length/width if oxer,) either might or may not work. Hope this helped!

you could try half halting her a few times leading up to the jump. i know a lot of horses at my place that do that but i don't think there's much you can do about it. hope i helped :)
