How to break a horse?

How can I break a horse? [please read]?

  • Eventually I think it'd be great to take unbroken horses or OTTBs and break them as riding horses. However, I'm only an intermediate rider. But this is something I'd like to learn to do. How can I do this? I realize that if you make a mistake, well, that can be a dangerous (even life-threatening) thing, or it can threaten the horse's well-being. What would you suggest for the future?

  • Answer:

I would say to partner up with an experienced trainer who can help you. OTTBs are very unpredictable (it's rare, although possible to find a quiet one) since they aren't used to most barn settings and lifestyles as I'm sure you know. But, an experienced trainer can give you lessons, train the horse with you, and help things progress in the right direction. It's good of you to realize that's its a dangerous thing. Most people just jump into it when they really aren't ready and that's how horses get ruined and people get injured.

I was a horse crazy kid and I read EVERYTHING about horses and riding horses and training horses. We always had a pony and/or horse or 2. When I was 12, I got my first 1 year old and worked with her and trained her. All throughout my teens and 20s, I raised and trained a few horses at a time and worked with other people's problem horses. Read everything you can get a hold of! You have the whole net at your fingertips! Experience is also an excellent teacher! Do not do this for money......you won't make any, but you'll love it!
