How high can my horse jump?

How high can a 16"3 THOROUGHBRED Jump (horse)?

  • She is am ex race horse(3 weeks off thew track) and very mellow and sweet. I am going to start jumping her and was wondering how high she could go? (13 year old will be riding her)

    The height of the horse won't determe the height she's able to jump (read up on the wonderful event horse, Charisma, competed mainly by Mark Todd). How high she's able to jump will be determined by her natural athletic ability and her training. Also, you didn't ask about the following but I'll mention it, nonetheless, in the interest of your mare: If you don't have experience retraining OTTBs or in training horses to jump, in general (which it appears is the case, judging from the questions you've posed) please get help from someone who's exerienced in both. And certainly give the mare a couple months to let down from her racing career, with plenty of good, safe turnout and good quality forage (grass or hay), no matter how "mellow and sweet" she is. If she's already been off from racing for a while then you can start with some basic ground work. She'll then need a solid schooling in flatwork, as most OTTBs do not have this training in their background, though a very few trainers do start them well in this way, most do not, as it's not crucial for the racing career.

if she's never jumped before you need to start her off on ground poles because you have no idea how she is going to react. Not all OTTBs are good at jumping. and once she is completely comfortable with ground poles you should do very low cross rails and then higher cross rails and then onto 2 foot and so on. you cant just go from the track to jumping. you need to train her, or you could easily hurt or kill her. and i wouldn't recommend a 13 yr old training a horse that's right off the track. i dont care how experienced they think they are. its just dangerous. but she may be able to jump over 4 foot or she may never get passes cross rails. it just depends on the horse and trainer
