Which Defensive Football Position Should I Play?

Which high school football position should I play?

  • It's my first year playing football on a high school team and I was wondering which positions are the least complicated and fit me. Im about 6"1 and weigh 185 lbs and I can run pretty fast but I can't throw that far or catch a pass.

  • Answer:

It would depend on your build. I know that when I played HS football, I was 6' 2" and my playing weight was 225. I was the starting running back and played iron man for a few games as a linebacker as well. With that size, if you have the power, you could start as a lineman for either offence or defence, with the preference at Defencive End. These positions are not as complicated at quarterback, but it also depends on the coach's playbook. If you go for a Defencive End, the main duties are usually to rush the quarterback and stop the run. It is rare to use them as zone pass defence. Another position that could use your size and speed is secondary. Covering receivers requires speed and size is an advantage in this position. The complications in this position is zone or man-to-man defence with the occasional blitz. Just keep in mind that the coach can also see you in another position, so be open to all positions. Good Luck

Dont listen to the previous post about being a runningback, you are WAY to tall. You should play safety or maybe cornerback/defensive halfback. You may want to consider linebacker as well. If you can block well then you may be able to play fullback. Ohh and how fast is your 40-yard time? Depending on the time then you can narrow your search down more. For now I think you will find success in these positions. Ohh and if you live in Canada try SST training camps if your serious about playing. They train you for speed and all other aspects required to be successful to be a good player. If you are good at running routes then speed is not a big factor. There are common misconceptions about being a reciever, people think you have to be tall and fast. They are right but if you look at people like Wes Welker, hes about 5 foot 9 and not fast at all. But he runs great routes and has learned to catch well. Even though you cant catch very well now, keep working at it with coaches and friends in your spare time. Good luck bud.

Consider being a LB. You don't have to catch or throw and you get to use your speed to rush the passer or tackle the running bacl and you have decent size.

As you can see with the previous answers, it's kinda hard for us to answer this question for you. My advice is to be the first player on the field at practice and the last one off. Work your butt off and pay attention to what your coaches tell you and then DO exactly what they tell you. Your coach will see that you are dedicated and coachable and HE will tell you what position is best for you. The most important thing in football is dedication and coachability, be that way and regardless of the position you play, you will have fun and be a productive member of your team. Good luck... If this answer isn't what you're looking for then just be a kicker.
