What kind of race skis should I get?

What kind of skis should I get?

  • I'm 165 cm tall, so I should be looking for skis around that size... right? I ski groomed slopes (i.e. Loon Mountain and Sunapee in NH). And my skills level is intermediate. Ive skied everything but a black diamond... I'm still scared of those haha. I've heard K2, Salomon and Roslindale (spelling?) are good brands. Oh and my budget is $100-200. I know I'm not going to get anything great in that range, but I was thinking of trying Ebay for a good deal. Thanks.

Can you demo any on a nearby mountain? That's definitely the best way to see if they suit. That said modern skis are so easy to ski, there's hardly a bad pair out there now! Anything less than 2 years old, no more than a month's total usage, and no longer than nose height should be fine, as long as it's not intended for experts (will be too stiff). Don't spend much cash at this stage. Save it for when you're a bit better. At that stage when you demo, you'll have learnt to feel the characteristics you do and don't like about a ski. Have fun!

I've heard those are good brands too. Check out if their is any local ski swaps around.

For your budget and skill level, look for a decent pair of used skis. Be sure not to get powder boards or something inadequate for the bullet proof snow the east is known for.

For you just about any ski will do (within reason - you don't want telemark gear probably, nor powder boards). I think for your level and height, perhaps you might want to go shorter than 165's, say 155-160. Don't worry about brand...you aren't hucking 100 foot cliffs, are you? Volkl's, Rossignol's, Heads, K2's, Atomic...they are all good, plus there are many others. Find out if ski shops are selling their demo gear, or hit up a ski swap...just go to a local ski shop and ask about that. I would stay away from e-bay, you don't know what you are getting, what problems the skis/bindings may have. Check bulletin boards, and classified ads. Lots of people ski on a nice set of skis for only a couple years, then dump them for a newer model. More power to 'em...I can't afford that strategy. No matter what, after you buy, take your skis and boots in for adjustment. You have to do that, or you may have a miserable winter in a cast!

Rossignol, Salomon, K2.... I agree! Try a local ski swap.

Hey dude, for someone at your level, I'd go with skis that reach somewhere between the tip of your nose and your chin. You might want to check around in local ski shops and see what length works for you. As a general rule, skis to the chin are very easy to control but don't go very fast, skis to the forehead are faster with less control (strong leg muscles required) and skis to the nose are about perfect. I reccomend nose-to-chin for you because maybe next season you might work up the courage to try a black diamond! As for brand, any skis will work; Atomics, Volkl, Fischer, Salomon, Rossis (Rossignol) and K2s, in order of my favorites. Good luck and have fun!

Well I think Rossignol is the best!! Really it works great for me! K2 is good too but i think Rossignol is better.
