Why do we have Queen Elizabeth the second in New Zealand, when we didn't have the first?
-
Seriously. I'm like the Monarchy and all, and I'm studying Colonial history at University, and I'd vote for an Imperialist party. Elizabeth II is legally entitled "Queen of New Zealand", even though we've had a British Monarch for well over 160 years, it was only recently that the British monarch was given a separate title, before it was [in NZ] "Queen/King of the United Kingdom and New Zealand", with the law change in the 1970s, shouldn't she be entitled just "Elizabeth"? We had no Elizabeth I [even before the title change], we had Victoria, Edward VII [it should be Ed I], George V [George I] Edward VIII [Ed II], George VI [George II] and Elizabeth II Anyone wanna answer?

Answer:
put simply, just because you didnt have the first elizabeth, doesnt mean elizabeth the second is incorrectly called so. she's the second queen to be called elizabeth, hence, queen elizabeth the second.

Yeah please I wanna answer your question. Elizabeth is the second Queen of England, the fact that your country was not around when the first Queen Elizabeth was on the throne has nothing to do with it. It got complicated when James First of Scotland became King of England and Scotland and was called James the sixth, as there had been 5 previous English James before him. When the names of the Kings or Queens repeat themselves they just add the 2, 3 , 4 etc. Your country is called NEW Zealand but its not new is it? Its been around as long as the UK has. I would not worry too much about wether she is the second or first Queen of New Zealand, life's too short to worry about the title of a Queen! She is just a great figurehead for this country and yours, the titles were probably decided by some politicians years ago,

Same goes for Scotland in fact. Queen Elizabeth ll is actually only the first one of Scotland as they were separate Kingdoms when Elizabeth l was queen.

The same goes for Scotland the last queen elizabeth was only for England, it's just typical English arrogance
