    William the Conqueror - who brought England into Europe! Edward III - master administrator, soldier and statesman Edward IV - politician, manager, innovator - including printing! Elizabeth I - probably the greatest success story of all William III (of William and Mary)who kept England together in the face of revolt and rebellion). I would next add Henry VIII for religious reform, and would like to nominate Victoria except she lost the plot after Albert died, so will add Elizabeth II for the almighty feat of keeping her throne while all about her have lost theirs!

A historian has to go far back to find an INFLUENTIAL monarch, because royal power declined after parliament took over the running of the country and operated upon the conceited head of Charles I. Monarchs thereafter became figureheads without real executive power. Strong personality sometimes showed through to inspire the mass of the population. Probably history will remember our present Queen with admiration for "doing her job well " over 50 years and more.
