How to make steel?

My elegant looking cutlery is stainless steel, how do I make it look darker and "dirtier" like silver?

  • Okay it looks odd when I have my sterling silver trays and use stainless steel cutlery. How do I make the stainless steel stuff look more like silver? The Marquess of Pembroke is coming to dinner tomorrow so I must hurry.

  • Answer:

    Leave it in a pail of water outside for a week or so, it will get a "dirty" look about it. Not much use now, I know but, at least you will know what to do next time the aristocracy comes a calling.

If your silver looks dark and dirty, then you aren't taking proper care of it. And there's hardly anything "elegant looking" about stainless steel anyway. Either use all silver, properly polished, or use all steel. And why is this in the Royalty section?

"Can I get a serious answer please?" You post this question in this category, and then wonder why no one takes you seriously? REALLY? BTW, it's STAINLESS...that should tell you something...it is NOT silver!!!

You can't - and if you could make it "dark and dirty", it would look equally odd on your silver trays, if they are polished as they ought to be. If your silver is dark and dirty-looking, your home will appear grubby and run-down however fine the ware intrinsically is. However, that's not your main problem re this dinner party. A much bigger problem is: who is the impostor you have invited to dinner? One person he cannot possibly be is the Marquess of Pembroke, as that title hasn't existed since the death of Anne Boleyn in 1536.

You don't: that's why it's called "stainless". It can't develop any tarnish or patina. I make sure my sterling is well polished when guests are coming, but it's unlikely guests will really notice any contrast.
