Someone once told me that there was an offence still on the statute book that carried the death penalty?

And that Wandsworth prison still has a set of gallows or similar in working order to carry this out. Is this a) True and b) What is the offence? I thought it was high-treason, ie murdering the Head of State but may be wrong.

Answer:
There are no crimes in the United Kingdom that carry the death penalty; The last 4, Treason, Arson at her majesties dockyards, Murder and Piracy (Argh!) were abolished in the 90s. In America, some states still use the Death Penalty.

Further to the previous answer. The Death Penalty is outlawed (except in times of war) by the European Convention of Human Rights. It is part of the approval procedure for prospective member states of the EU. They must ditch the DP to join the EU.

There is it's called Treason. It's not just limited to murdering a head of state. Wandsworth still has a set of gallows.

technically treason is punishable by any means seen fit by the ruling body. in simple terms this means that, because the ruling body does not accept the death penalty, it can not be handed down by the law lords. however, should a head of state or ruling body decide one day that the feel the death penalty is ok they could punish someone for treason with it without changing the law. edit yes we signed an agreement saying we wouldn't however we could still choose to do it and it would still be lawful!

it used to be high treason and piracy but since 1998 even they have been rescinded . The death penalty is still on the statute books in the Channel islands and the isle of man but it is always commuted to life. There is a hanging shed in Wadsworth

you can be hung for killing a swan or defacing the queens image, such as pressing a penny, drawing a tash on her on the back of a fiver, or eating a stamp with her head on it, though i really cant see it happening,,,, it would be funny thogh,, ''' for consumption of this stamp, and the consequential chewing and mushing up of our lady queens image you traitor, shall ave yer head whipped clean orf'' to the dungeon with him,, tell u what though, that would bring in all thje yanks and japs flashin wiv the cameras,, they should do it if tourism ever looks a little slow!!!!!
