Has there been an atheist royal family in history?

Were there any atheist royal families in history?

  • This question originally came from someone else. Everyone dubbed him a troll so no one actually answered the question. I'm interested in knowing. Were there any atheist royal families in history?

  • Answer:

With the possible exception of Communist countries during the 20th and 21st centuries, no country has espoused atheism as a state religion. Various hereditary rulers have, however, held views similar to what society defines today as either atheist (a belief in no religion at all) or agnostic (the individual admits that he or she does not know whether a god or gods exists). To be more precise, an atheist "is not in search of spiritual meaning through finding proof of a god. The agnostic may, on the other hand, be looking for proof, or may be open to the proofs . . . The agnostic does not necessarily rule out that faith might come to him or her at some future point" (Ellis-Christensen, 2010, May 31). Using this definition, the following hereditary rulers were most probably either atheists or agnostics, based on their own comments or writings as well as their behavior: ---John of Lackland, English King (1188-1216) ---Frederick the Great (1712-1786) Gilbert, 2006)
